This is a nice used Vintage Starrett 98 series 8" machinist's 12" level in very good condition. The precision level has some signs of use and the glass is fine. The glass has ground and graduated main vials and the base of the level features an involute groove running the 12" length which provides a reliable seat for round work. The vials are adjustable to a positive setting in their satin finished tube with a friction fit closing cover. This protects the vial from damage. The vial graduations are.005" per foot. This is a beautiful antique machinist Starrett 12inch level no.98 with ground glass graduated vials. This level has a total of 3 glass bubbled vials. One on the end, one in the middle, and the large one on the top, all three are in beautiful intact condition. The large vial on top has a slide over safety cover which is marked The LS Starrett Co Altho Mass USA. The condition of this antique level is very nice and clean with great a shiny nickel finnish, very little black wear, and a previous name scratched in the side. I believe this name can be touched up rather easily. This level retains the original dovetailed wood case with paper label. This is a Starrett Machinist Level# 98-6 that has been barely used. It is in its original box. This level features a graduated ground vial. The base features an involute groove running the length of the base. Which provides a reliable seat for round work. There is a cross test vial. The main vial is adjustable to a positive setting and is housed in a satin finished tube with a friction-fit closing cover to prevent breakage. The main level vial has graduations that indicate 80-90 seconds or.005" per foot. There are slight signs of use. The base has a small amount of tarnish but no corrosion. The box is solid except for the one corner that needs a little glue repair.

Providing a reliable seat for placing on round work. There are 3 vials. One cross-type on the end. To avoid a cant error while checking level. There is a 3rd vial(cross-type) located under the main vial for use when the level is used vertically, rather than horizontally. A quality level is absolutely invaluable when setting up a bench lathe. And other machinery. The longer the better, too. The specs on this level are"005" per foot" per Starrett web site.
