It is printed in a small format. Measuring 6 x 9.5 inches in size. The paper is 16 pages long, and features a very small typeface, so it is crammed with material. The issue came from a bound volume, and has typical slight disbinding marks at its spine, but is otherwise in very fine condition, printed on a strong quality paper, and with its pages free from any tears, and fully readable. It contains a great and lengthy article on a PIRACY TRIAL held in Richmond. Va. with Supreme Court Chief Justice JOHN MARSHALL presiding. This takes up a total of over four full pages of text. And includes fine detail on the individual pirates, including some verbatim ... moretestimony delivered in court against them. It begins: The crew of the Creola. A private armed vessel having a Buenos Ayrean commission, when lying in the port of Margaretta, rose upon their officers and seized another private armed vessel, lying in the same port, called the Irresistible, having a commission as of Artigas—and then without any papers whatsoever, commenced cruizing on their own account and captured several vessels: after which they entered the Chesapeake bay and generally dispersed themselves—some of them were taken up at Norfolk as pirates and sent to Richmond for trial, before the U.S. circuit court, chief justice Marshall presiding. This case of The Irresistible was the first tried under the revised 1819 U.S. law against piracy on the high seas. The Confederate surrender helped shut down Mobile as an effective Confederate port city. On August 5. 1864, Farragut won a great victory in the Battle of Mobile Bay. Mobile was then the Confederacy's last major port open on the Gulf of Mexico. The bay was heavily mined(tethered naval mines were known as torpedoes at the time) Farragut ordered his fleet to charge the bay. When the monitor USS Tecumseh struck a mine and sank. Near the end of the war. The U S.S. INDIANA battleship supported the carriers in strikes against northern Honshu on 10 August. And in the Tokyo area on the 13th and 15th. The latter was the last strike of the war for, later that day, Japan capitulated. On 30 August she assisted in landing U.S. occupation forces. Including a landing force of 238 sailors and 76 marines from the complement of the INDIANA, at Yokosuka Naval Base in Tokyo Bay, where the Japanese formal surrender took place on 02 September. Measuring about 34" x 41" This is US Coast& Geodetic Survey Nautical Chart No. C&GS 260, titled"United States- East Coast- Massachusetts- Falmouth Harbor to Buzzards Bay. Sure enough, Buzzards Bay and Naushon Island are on the left, Woods Hole at the lower center, Falmouth on the right, and the east Chop and West Chop promontories of Martha's Vineyard Island at the lower right. It is dated 1965, and stated to be the 3rd Edition. The scale is 1:20,000. Apart from having been cropped along the top and both side edges. LEWES DELAWARE, DELAWARE BAY This British 6 pounder cannonball was found in the Delaware Bay near Lewes Delaware at Cape Henlopen& dates back to the Revolutionary or War of 1812. In 1782 during the American Revolutionary War. Continental Navy Lieutenant Joshua Barney fought with a British squadron near Cape Henlopen at the Battle of Delaware Bay. Barney's force of three sloops defeated a Royal Navy frigate, a sloop-of-war and a Loyalist privatee. The battle ended with the loss of two British vessels and one American. This information was optained from the Naval Historical Center at the Washington Navy Yard. Also during the War of 1812 there was a large British bombardment of the American shore batteries in this area. Description: This is beautiful hand colored example of the 1857 U. S. Coast Survey nautical chart or maritime map of the Gulf Coast from Mobile Bay. Alabama to Borgne(Bogue) Lake, Louisiana. Centered on the Mississippi Sound, the map extends westward as far as Rabbit Island and Little Lake and eastward as far as Oyster Bay. It notes countless depth soundings in feet as well as detailed notes on tides, winds, light houses and a wealth of other practical information for the mariner. Little inland detail is offered, however, several towns and cities are identified, including Shieldsboro, Biloxi, Mississippi City, ... morePascagoula, Mobile and Alabama. The triangulation for this map, executed between 1846 and 1855, was the work of F. H. Gerdes, R. H. Fauntleroy, C. M. Eakin, S. A. Gilbert and J. E. Hilgard. The topography by completed by W. E. Greenwell, J. G. Oltmanns, R. M. Bache, W. S. Gilbert and J. E. Hilgard between 1846 and 1855. The hydrography was accomplished by J. P. Patterson and B. F. Sands. The whole was compiled under the supervision of A. D. Bache, one of the most influential American cartographers of the 19th century. This chart represents plate no. 49 in A. D. Bache's 1857 Report of the Superintendent of the United States Coast Survey. Size: Printed area measures 20 inches high by 41 inches wide. Condition: Very good. Description: The extremely scarce first edition first state of Bellin's important 1744 map of the Gulf Coast from New Orleans past Mobile Bay. As far east as Apalachicola Bay and the St. Marks River. Though still quite speculative, Bellin's rendition of this little known coastline was, at the time, among the best available. The cartographer charts the course of the Mississippi River with some care nothing both the'Detour des Piaquemines' and the English Turn or'Detour a L'Anglois' Most of the delta ... moreis represented a ffertile grassland, but some forested regions suitable for European settlement are noted near the Abandoned French Fort de la Boulaye. Following the map eastward along the coastline Bellin offers details as they were available. The site of various battles and massacres are identified as are American Indian villages, mission stations, fortifications, and European entrapots such as Biloxi, Mobile, St. Marc, and indeed New Orleans itself. A Spanish settlement is noted near the Apalachicola River and St. Joseph Bay(Baye St. Joseph) a clear reminder that much of this territory, though claimed by various European powers and American Indian nations, remained very much up for grabs. Mobile Bay, situated near the center of the map, is vaguely formed with Bon Secour Bay being vastly under represented. In the far northwest corner of the map the Natchez Trace or Natchez Road. This network of linked gamed trails is one of the world's oldest roadways, well used centuries before the arrival of Europeans.
