He was one of the top young surfers in California and came to Hawaii in ... more1953 to surf big waves at Makaha and gained international fame when Honolulu photographer Scoop Suzuki photographed him, Woody Brown, and George Downing riding a 20 foot wave, and was published in newspapers around the globe. Buzzy’s fame continued when he surfed the biggest day ever ridden at Makaha January 12, 1958 when the waves were 20-40 feet+ and always went for the biggest, gnarliest waves, and was an incredible waterman. This photo of his son Ivan, which continues the family tradition, appeared in a Navy newspaper, circa 1995 and is a friend of the photographer. Waimea Bay is home of the Eddie Aikau Memorial Big Wave Surfing Contest, and some of the largest rideable waves in the world. This photo was also published in several surfing magazines. Waimea waves are some of the most powerful on earth. Generated by far distant North Pacific Ocean storms during the winter months(Sept-March) They are an incredible example of the ocean's mightiness. This 40 foot high wave is breaking in water only about 15 feet deep. Older less than fair quality(its grainy, has some dust marks and low contrast, from and old Tri-X film 45+ year old negative, but nice historical photo) hand printed original silver halide gelatin photograph(not a digital inkjet print) custom printed by long time Hawaii professional surfing photographer Bill Romerhaus in a darkroom from the original negative It was archivally developed in chemistry on Ilford'Pearl' semi-matte surface black& white photographic paper and mounted on a black 8x10 inch backing board with caption and photography information on the back of Hawaiian surfing legend Eddie Aikau at Waimea Bay, North Oahu, on a smaller day, he was out by himself but there were some 20 foot sets. It is initialed(BR 67' by the photographer in the lower corner and dated on the front of the photo, and is shrink ... morewrapped to protect it from damage. It has preservation tips included in the label on the back. Again, please note: it is from an older grainy negative so please be aware of that, and has some major blemishes and won't look as sharp on the larger print. It was taken when the photographer was a senior in high school, hand held, with an old Pentax 135mm lens on Kodak Tri-X. This is right before short boards started showing up on the north shore. Haven't printed a whole lot of these and it is probably a collectible. It would make a great gift for someone who likes this area or historic surfing images of Hawaii. Eddie. Who was known as a big wave rider, also liked to surf small to medium size waves at this break, Laniakea, Sunset, Haleiwa, Makaha, and Chun's Reef. Edward Ryan Aikau, who was born on Maui in 1946 was lost at sea during a ocean disaster on the Hokule'a ancient sailing canoe replica in 1978. During an extremely hazardous storm, the double hulled canoe capsized and Aikau left on a surfboard in an attempt to paddle for help, he was never seen again. If you're familiar with Waimea, you'll notice the'boil' and realize how big this wave really was, and this was only a smaller one of the biggest sets that day that were consistently closing out across the entire bay! There were many days of ... moresurf this size over a two month period. It has preservation tips and photography information included in the label on the back. It would make a great gift for someone who likes this area or historic ocean images of Hawaii. The surf during the 1969 winter season was undoubtedly the largest ever seen on the north shore. Waimea Bay broke at least 20-30 times and there were periods of 30-40 foot(old Hawaiian surf height) surf that lasted for weeks that would be called 50-60+ feet by modern weather bureau standards today. It was incredible. There were some days that you could stand on shore and single swells came in that blocked the horizon as far as you could see. The waves were so big that they were'stacking' building up on each other faster than the water could recede) and washing over Kam highway at many locations. At least 11 lives were lost. Mostly spectators on shore, and there was a lot of property damage. Please note that this was printed from the original grainy negative and has some dust marks and small imperfections that you can't see on this screen. But it still looks OK. It depicts Wisconsin 30 years after the Civil War, and the detail includes railroads, cities, Indian reservations, township and range lines, and natural features.
