But that is just a guess. They were used by a friends grandfather for gold mining in the california mountains. It is stamped"Battersea Round Morgan England" It also has a"F" on it too. Nice pair of assayer's cups being sold as is. I am not sure of their exact age. The green glazed cup looks like it was never used and is in almost perfect condition. The second cup with the red residue inside was definitely used. It has a few chips, cracks and a piece missing around the rim of the cup. The cups are not marked. Hand made, thrown on potter's wheel, stoneware assay(probably gold or silver) crucible or cup 5-3/8" tall by 2-1/16" base by 2-9/16" opening with a 1/8" wide ride. The crubile or cup was hand made on a potter's wheel since the ridges from shaping it can be seen along the inside. The stoneware is not very high quality and feels like it was almost made out of sand. The crucible is in very condition considering its ... moreage and the type of use it was intended for. There is some loss of glaze along the sides. Along the the inside of the rim, and the whole base. Also. A very tiny 1/32" chip at the outside of the rim and a 1/4" by 1/8" chip along the bottom edge over the rim, which hardly can be seen when the cup is standing up plus a 1/4" by 1/8" chip on the bottom that can't be seen when the crucible is standing. There are no breaks, cracks, etc. Normally these type of crucibles have a lot more loss of glaze and much larger chips or breaks. The cup was found at an estate sale in Colorado and was probably used in Cripple Creek or Victor(within 1 to 1-1/2 hours drive from Colorado Springs) or in one of the many areas of prospecting and mines for gold and silver over 100 years ago although it is possible it came from the gold fields of California. Offered is this interesting crucible. There looks to be some markings on the base but they have blurred beyond comprehension. I'm unsure of the age of the crucible or what it is composed of. It was discovered in SE Pennsylvania. The crucible is in good condition. Used with a nice patina due to melted metal on the inside and outside. One little chip(1/2" to the inside of the lip, looks like a tiny piece of the melted metal came off and exposed the actual crucible, nothing major. No cracks or breaks. Offered here is a bone ash assayers crucible that reads on bottom"Gold Belt Mine Cleater. Ariz. with the letters ARLT. Do not know the designation of the letters. Measures 3.75" tall. Cleater is located in Yuvaipa County, Arizona- a near ghost town today though I understand there is at least one bar still open for thirsty travelers. Crucible likely held an ore sample from the Gold Belt Mine for reference. Thanks for looking!

crucible and couples antique 1849 gold rush
These crucibles and couples are from the 1849 California gold rush. They were found behind the assay office in Mokolumny Hill Calif. This town has been flooded and has become a lake. One of the crucibles is stamped by the maker. The conditon is excellent. There are a few minor chips on the crucible from use.
