Well. Being that this is made by the"Williams Gold Refining Company" I expected that they would build gold refining ovens. And since this conveniently fits four standard assay crucibles at one time perfectly. Heh, you would think it would do the job, NOPE! Seems to be a low temperature curing oven. The temperature gets up to around 500 degrees, and it makes me wonder if the company didn't start out building gold refining ovens but simply slap in cooler elements for different purposes. Who knows. The company is long defunct and this is a vintage furnace. I know this should appeal to a lot of people who are not able to set up a huge kiln for doing pottery. I should think that it is sufficient for pottery since I was able to bake borax into a quite hard mass with it. I can only imagine that it would make clay set pretty good too. ... moreI really don't know, but it is just my guess. Otherwise, I don't know what such a low temp oven is good for but I am sure someone out there can either modify it for more heat or else adapt it to some use they might have. Runs on extremely small amount of power, sure, it takes an hour or two to heat up, but your energy useage is almost nothing, and you could probably use it if you live in a small apartment, just set it on your porch or patio or balcony or whatever you have for a yard. People barbeque all the time, why not do your pottery, or maybe you work with some resins in which case this might be just what you needed! I won't tell you what I paid for it. Powers up and Heats Up. The thermometer seems to lag behind the heating quite a bit. So I don't know if that part is working properly. Because of electrical limitations, I didn't dare turn the heat all the way up on high, but it certainly heated up nicely. At less than 90% on each setting of Low, Medium and High the heat light would cycle on and off regularly. The Main light stayed on all the while. The longer I kept the furnace on, the higher the temperature readout went, so the thermometer is working at least that much. I could also hear the furnace make noise like a motorized timer and I could hear as the heating elements turned on and off. At more than 90% the heat light stayed on constantly. This oven has dings and dents and bumps to the stainless steel case. There is also a crack to the ceramic liner as shown. Ceramic has also broken off in little bits from the"ribs" that separate the heating elements inside(here and there- not enough to be a concern I think) There is tape and sticker residue on the case from where the door was taped closed during handling by the state. With that all being said I'm not sure of the extent of the automatic mode.I couldn't tell if I was entering degrees C or ramp rate in auto mode. You will have to play with that. One meter reads current flow in amps with the bar graph. The controller reads temperature and also has other readouts for ramp etc. But I'm not sure of how to program it. The heating chamber is in good condition with no cracks. The top of the item is burn and a bit rusted. Please refer to the photos below for more details on the item. This item was plugged in and powered on. The control light and power light both came on but flickered. We set the item to the maximum temperature(2200F) and let the item sit for around 30 minutes. We used an inferred thermometer to measure the internal temperature and it read 438 degrees F. We left the item on for another 10 minutes and it read 621 degrees F. Tube furnace, Creep rupture, vertical, Tensile, 2000 watt, 120V, SW-21 Satec
This is a used Satec creep rupture furnace in very good condition. The furnace could also be used for tensile testing. The controllers for the furnace and servo positioner are not included. This furnace is mounted to a servo driven linear positioner which precisely raises and lowers the furnace. Limit switches control the range of travel. The stand is made from anodized aluminum and very sturdy. Although a contoller is not included with this sale we tested the furnace by applying 120V to the top and bottom terminals and the amp draw was measured at 17.33 amps which is consistent with the nameplate rating. The actual temperature rating of the furnace is not listed on the nameplate. But we let the unit run to 1000 deg F and it was still climbing. There are multiple taps along the length of the chamber for alternative connection methods. One ... moreof the photos show a diagram of the measured resistances between the terminals to be used as reference for alternative connection possibilities. The chamber is in excellent condition and barely shows any signs of heat markings. The aluminum base and servo slide have some minor scratches.
