This is a tripod I bought in 1983 to mount& calibrate a vintage transit that I was restoring. Once the transit was restored and calibrated. The tripod saw no use, as I put the transit on a shelf for display; so the tripod has been leaning against the wall in the garage gathering dust. Now it's time to make some space. You can see the tripod's paint is like new. The black plastic thread-protector cap that appears in one of the photos comes with it. The leather strap that secures the legs in the stowed position is original. The tripod's collapsed height with legs together is 41" the height with the legs fully extended is 66" The tripod weighs about 16 lbs. The top casting appears to be brass. The legs are wood. It has the original small wrench to replace the spurs. The tripod is like new, and makes a rock-solid instrument ... moremount. The photo gallery includes a copy of the original invoice. The tripod was purchased from A&B Smith Co. Of Monroeville, PA on 3/22/83. Engineers never throw anything away. A&B Smith was the premier engineering supply store in Pittsburgh in the 1980's. The spread of the legs does not lock in, so you need to set it in place and leave it there. It was manufactured Sunart Photo Co. Fully extended it is about 57 inches. There are metal spikes in the feet. It collapses to about 30 inches by less than 3 inches. The only issue I see is that the marking of the 14" ruler at the very tip is just starting to come off but still quite intact[ last photo. it needs a little glue to hold it down] No issue with the wood or the clamps. Zeiss Opton Instrument Tripod
This is a beautiful tripod. It appears to be for a surveying instrument. The tripod has clean streamlined art deco styling- especially the cone-shaped feet. It is missing the screw clamp that should stick through the top mounting plate. The legs and clamps and top all seem to be in good condition. It is a little wobbly but I think that this can be fixed by tightening the screws that snug up the ball and socket joints at the top.
