The item for sale is a wooden printing block letter S that is in good condition with marks and patina as per photo- the black mark through the centre top to bottom is a shallow groove. The block is 2.5/8"68mm) tall and and approx 7/8" thick overall. Although the photos were taken outside the fill in flash has made the blocks look a little lighter than they are. Will be posted using a cardboard box. Offered for sale is an antique( over 100 yr. old) personal printing kit in it's original box measuring 3 3/8" by 2 1/2" by 1" tall. The top of the cardboard box reads.Superior Family Printing Outfit" and underneath it reads,From I T Coleman, 39 Steelton, Pa. One side of the box has come off, as you can see in the pictures. There is a tiny tweezers for setting the wooden type into the wooden holders inside. There are 59 pieces of 5 mm type. This item has been used and the person who owned it played with it and printed on the top and bottom of the box and on the inside of the box lid. It is still a really cool antique printing piece. Design: Group of 8 Very Fancy Letters(My guess is) B C H I M N S U Note: These are beautiful. But some are very hard to decipher. What is your guess) Material: Solid Brass Approximate Size Each: 1“ High ½” to 1” Wide Solid Brass- on their backsides they lay 1/4" tall. The solid brass print blocks were very rare. I believe these were used in long press runs. As they would hold up better than foundry type or wood type. I purchased thousands of old print blocks from several printing shops over 30 years ago. Some of these print shops were in the family for 3 or more generations. I have a small handful of auto related or National Geographic’s that are solid brass. Less than 2 dozen. I also have another group of ornate ... moredesigns around 4 dozen pieces. We never used them because they had to be either mounted on a Zinc or foundry type block. To bring them up to type high, or used on special presses. They are not“Type High” I have 1 that is mounted on a type metal block to make it“type high” The reason for this. Is that if somehow there was too much pressure, the type metal would give before the brass metal would. The two that I have both tops are in good shape. While the bottoms each have a corner that is damaged. The bottoms can be replaced very easily and inexpensively. I have other interesting Vintage Printer Blocks on auction. Vintage Printing Press Wood Block Letters Type Set in Shadow Box Tray Here is a beautiful old set of printing blocks with a fabulous patina as pictured. I believe the wood is white maple or hickory. And I can't see a single thing wrong with any of them other than one of the"M"s has a fine line in it. Each block measures approximately 1 3/8 inch square by 15/16 inch deep. Some are a little smaller. From what I was able to find out this set dates from the 50's to early 60's. It also includes the original wood and tin tray. The tray is finished in a mint green hammer tone. This set has 107 Characters and 3 spacers. The tray is in very nice condition with only a few very minor scratches here and there. This would make a beautiful wall ornament or even ... moremessage board in any home or office. All in all a very nice hard to find piece. The tray measures 13 1/2 inches wide by 22 3/4 inches tall by 1 1/4 inches deep. This is the best priced and most complete one on e-bay. Complete as pictured. Howdy Folks, Hope all is well. Up for your viewing or auctioning pleasure is a printing block. The picture is of a fancy ornamental type design. The letter inside the middle is removable. This block is copper on metal. No other markings. Since it is a used printing block there could be some scratches and scuffs and nicks. I used some never dull to clean it up a little. However they will need to be cleaned better. Remember that it is used and will need a better cleaning. Folks please refer to the pictures for more description. Measures about 1 1/4" x 1 1/16" and about 7/8" deep. Note: some of the pictures I used a flash. So that's why some are so bright and gold looking.
