That these letters have been made around 1900 ... moreor even before. We have counted 56 pieces. We hope, that we did not make any mistake on counting, but you will see, what you get on the close-up photos below. Some of the characters have metal(probably lead) on the top, the bottom is also for these letters wood. A very nice set which is a gain for every collection. Each character measures 49 mm: 1.93 inch. We have removed some dust. But did no full cleaning. The characters were stored up to now in drawers, this is a gorgeous and exceptionnel set of characters. Cleaned Font of 14 Point Brush (ATF #689) Vintage Letterpress Lead Metal Type
This auction is for a hand cleaned font of 14 Point Brush letterpress lead type(ATF#689) which includes Caps. Lower Case, Numbers and Punctuation, cast by American Type Founders. Type has not been used by me, and had been used somewhat by the previous owner. Just about all of the font cleaned up very well. Some pieces remained dark, although I can assure they are clean. See photos for more visual information. Photo#4 is a reverse(mirror) image for ease in identifying the individual characters. Note that most of the script letters have a standard sans serif letter imbedded on the face corresponding to it in case of confusion in reading the typeface. And it is ready to be shipped inside a USPS Small Flat Rate Box. I clean all my type with a commercially available ink solvent/ cleaner. Along with a bristle brush(non-metallic bristles ONLY) I do not attempt to remove the natural dullness from aging(patina) on the typeface itself, as it does not hinder the printing process. There are 2024 individual pieces out of a possible total of 2048. The extra pieces were missing when I acquired this. It is still a fantastic find. Some are red in color. Only on the top though. No idea why they are red though. There are some English letters sprinkled in there but the vast majority are in what I believe is Chinese. Please look to the pictures for details and see the label. I think it might be information about the font or at least who the manufacturer is. The box is very lightweight wood and it has partitions that holds the type in place. The side hinge is in good shape but the latch on the front is missing. I will wrap it securely so that the type will stay in place. 15/16 ... moreinch long 3/16 inch wide on each side(square) Sorry I don’t know the conversion to pts. The origin of this font design is Germanic. The fourth and fifth photos are reversed(right reading) for ease in checking the font and being able to determine condition and the individual letters in the font. Some letters may be out of order. The sixth photo is an image of a specimen sheet taken from the 1912 ATF Type Catalogue. Please Note: Some of the letters are a different variation of the font being offered. The last photo is also from the same ATF Catalogue. An image from a piece called‘Consolation of Philosophy’ The type is used. But still produces very good print quality and detail. 100 CHINESE words 36pt LETTERPRESS METAL rare Vtg ANTIQUE LEAD printers TYPE
i bought these chinese words a few years ago. i had an idea of using them to decorate book covers with my hot stamping machine but i never got around to doing it. i am guessing that the size is 36 point because it's pretty large. if i could find my printers measure i could measure the type. maybe it will turn up in a day or so and i will add the size to this description. another guess is that maybe these words came from an old chinese newspaper. Maybe from headlines. i have no idea what the words mean. i hope they are nice words. my son married a woman from beijing so my grandsons are half chinese and that is why i got so interested in chinese words.but i never really learned anything but nai nai which means grandma. i put these type pieces in a SMALL FLAT RATE BOX so the charge is $7 shipping anywhere in the united states. i think internationally ... moreit costs about $25. i do not think this is foundry type because it just looks like that kind of hot type from those fascinating machines that create the type while the printer types. but the type looks hardly used and it looks sharp to me. if you have any questions.
