These are my last three boxes of mixed wood carved(some with metal overlay) printing press letters from our families print shop. My family ran a working newspaper in Canova South Dakota for over 100 years. The Canova Harold) These letters were used in the type set of the newspaper. Each box is 10 inches by 13 inches and each one contains between 68- 80 different items. A combo of letters. Numbers, and punctuation. Different typsets also. Antique/Vintage Math Rules, 0 to 9 FRAMED Letterpress wood printing blocks
A very precise high quality custom piece to gift or keep or use as a motivational tool in the classroom. Printing in the 1800's and early 1900's were done with hand picked and placed wooden printing blocks. These are 100 +/ year old large 4" tall wooden(maple) numbers. With EXCEPTIONAL patina unique to each block because of the inks used and the type of wood that the blocks are made of. The blocks have been polished on the letter face to a semi gloss shine, are flat black around the letter, and the rest of the surfaces are buffed to a satin finish. These fit precisely into a custom made exotic hardwood frame. Without the bright light. The frame looks black instead of brown. WENGE is like a cross between ebony for the natural black coloration and oak for the open wood grain. The outside dimensions are 18-15/16" x 7-5/8" ... morex 7/8" deep. The inside dimensions are 15-1/4" x 4" This piece will sit upright on a flat surface. It can also be a wall hanging. I will provide hanging hardware if you want to display it this way. The blocks are removable when the humidity is low. This contains the numbers 0- 9. These blocks are turn of the century and made by the Hamilton Manufacturing Company of Two Rivers. Wisconsin. HUGE lot of antique print letterpress printing blocks vintage MUST SEE 191 pcs
Hate to let this go but we are moving to another state. My mother an I bought these at a swap in 1986 and I have carted them to 4 states and can't do a fifth. How odd that I would get a degree in printmaking 10 years later! These are mostly copper. Some zinc, most are mounted on blocks. I would say looking at the graphics that there is quite a range in dates but most I would say are pre-1940. I've printed a half a dozen of them. The images are mostly advertising, lots of housewares, hardware, and a bunch of fishing images. May have to ship in a few boxes due to weight. I will charge shipping the actual cost to ship.
