Vintage Federal Pacific Roller Smith Precision Balance with Weighing Hook 250mg
This is a working Roller Smith Precision Balance manufactured in Bethlehem. Pa. There's no date on this instrument but It appears to be from mid 1900s. The mottled gray finish is in good condition but there are a few scuffs and marks as shown in the photos. All mechanisms work and the glass panels are pristine. This balance is pretty enough that my wife displayed it on the fireplace mantle. S erial number is 704570 and there is a Federal Pacific Electric Co tag on the base. The capacity is 250 milligrams with 1 mg divisions on the scale. There are 3 adjustable feet with a bubble level. The front locking lever works fine and it was simple to zero with the back panel lever. I didn't have any way to check calibration but it appears to wotk well. One baby aspirin with a piece of thread weighs 114mg seems about right after accounting for ... morefillers. This comes with a plywood case that is solid but quite scratched and scuffed with several pieces of old masking tape as shown in the photos. There are 4 feet on the bottom and four on the back but the handle is missing. Case measures 14" x 11.5" x 8" I will pack this well and double box it but insurance may be a good idea for this precision instrument.
