1890 Art Nouveau Maco Braga Brass Balance Beam Scales
These massive old scales are truly something special. They really capture the beauty, craftsmanship and flamboyance of the Victorian era. They have acquired an amazing coppery patina on the brass over the last 123 years as you can see in the photo's, and feature Tiamat the chaos dragon from Babylonian mythology atop these wonderful old scales. Her tongue supporting the brass beam which features six other early Art Nouveau stylized dolphin like sea serpents on each side of the beam. The two original brass pans are suspended from the original chains and hooks. The reeded brass column that runs from the base to Tiamats head is the one thing that makes these much rarer than any of the other Maco Braga scales you will see for sale. I have never seen another set of these scales that has a central column as these do! I have maybe run across ... morea half dozen sets like this over the last 20 years and every other one I have seen has the reeded column mounted at the rear of the base, rather than the center as these do. Walsh who are suppliers of jewellers and horologists tools, equipment and materials. They are made of brass, and are on a mahogany box. The scales are marked to weigh up to 300 grammes, are also marked'Class B' and carry the official government weights and measures inspection mark. They have not been used for many years, and also look to have only had very light use. They could do with a clean, particularly the brass pans, and the raising/lowering mechanism is very slightly stiff. They have no physical damage, just a very slight deterioration in places of the lacquer on the brass, mainly on the sharp edges. Up for bid is a pair of Ohaus Series 700/800 Laboratory triple beam balance scales. Overall they are both in good condition. Both appear to work as they should. The first scale shows a small amount of writing in sharpie and some etched in text on the lower front in two places. The plate on the top shows moderate surface wear and scratching and is a bit dirty with a very small amount of light surface rust. All of the weights are present and it appears to be in good condition overall. The second scale shows some tape residue towards the bottom. It is generally in good shape and shows only minor exterior wear. One of the weights on the top is missing(0-100 gram scale) It looks to be complete otherwise. Selling is a vintage W. M. Welch Scientific Company 200 Gram double beam cast iron balance scales. This balance has a 0 to 10 Gram beam and a 0 to 200 Gram(10Grm increments) beam. Both are required to make measurements above 11 Grams. For measurements of less than 10 Grams. The single beam may be used but the 200 Grm Beam weight has to be in its full left position(when viewed from the front) Weights are moved along the beams until the balance indicator points to a center mark on the balance scale and then the weight is read directly off where the weights ended up. A fine adjustment wheel sits right below the balance scale to fine adjust the balance point when all weights have been removed off the platforms and the slide weights returned to their zero setting. This should be done prior to making any measurement. The balance is accurate to ... morea tenth of a gram. The scale is used but is in remarkable condition. It would make an excellent discussion piece for any home study or office. The buyer will have to make a few adjustments to tune the scale in prior to using it. This very unusual set of Georgian pan scales measure 165mm(6.5' across the beam and 62mm(2.5' across the pans and comes complete with its original mahogany box. Both pans are fully hallmarked for solid English sterling silver London 1810 with the makers mark for Thomas Meriton and have interestingly been filed across the base to reduce the weight and get them to balance. The beam does have rust marks along it and I am sure it would benefit from re-stringing but I have only ever seen one other balance beam with its original hallmarked silver pans so they are pretty scarce. Antique Indian weighing scales, beam balance
These are old. Probably 19th century, and are I think from India or Afghanistan. They were probably used by a trader to weigh produce of some kind- veg, opium, grain? The wonderfully straight grained hardwood beam is a great example of the'equal armed' variety of balance beam. It is about 27" long, has a suspension hole in the centre and through both ends for the cords for the weighing baskets. The beam gently tapers from the centre toward the ends and has well turned knobs at either end. The baskets, made of animal hide stitched to a wooden hoop, are now quite stiff, have seen plenty of use and have small splits repairs etc. The suspension cords look wonderfully authentic and are completely mismatched, old tatty and have numerous repairs- I didn't have the heart to replace them.
