Description: This Sovereign Scale would have been used by 18th& 19th century shopkeepers to detect whether gold sovereign or half sovereign coins had been"Clipped" This was a practice where unscrupulous people cut small pieces from gold coins. Thus reducing their weight and value. The clippings were collected and then sold for their scrap value. This made from brass and folds into a mahogany case. The size is about 1 x 1 x 6 inches. Originally made by Avery. Birmingham. If a coin was full weight it would just tip the scale. On the left hand arm is a flip over counterweight for either sovereign or half sovereign testing. A small slider on the right hand arm could be adjusted to see by how much the coin value had been reduced if it was less than the correct weight. You are bidding on a vintage Antique CAST IRON SCALE. In used condition. Solid& sturdy in good shape. The brass pan/scoop has three small cracks on the edges, I tried to show the largest one in a picture. From a doctors estate it was on display in his office& looks like it was refinished at one time. One end has a brass scoop& the other end has a flat cast iron pan. The Scale is heavy& measures approx 12 3/8" long x 3 3/4" wide x 9" tall. The base reads: GEM No 5. There are 5 different size Brass weights that fit into holes on the base that are marked on the top: 1/4- 1/2- 1- 2- 4. The numbers stand for ounces. EARLY 1800'S ANTIQUE HAND FORGED IRON AND BRASS BALANCE SCALE WOOD BASE WEIGHTS
This auction is for a very wonderful early balance scale made of forged iron and brass on a wood base. It comes with weights that are hallmarked. I am putting the scale in the 1800's category. But I feel that it could be earlier. The larger brass pan lifts out of the hanger which is wonderfully forged(see photos) and has ram's horn ends. The smaller brass pan is attached to the iron piece. Three of the weights are brass and the other three are iron. I have not researched the hallmarks on the weights, but that might give a clue to the date. The scale has nice patina except that someone cleaned the iron of the smaller brass pan, apparently when they polished the brass pans. It is unfortunate, but you can see the pitting in the iron and it is clear that it is indeed old iron. Both arms with pans on each side can be removed from the main ... morearms. The scale may be European in origin and may have been imported early on for use in this country, I don't really know. Also, I can't remember if I purchased the iron weights separately, but I know for sure that the brass one came with it. In any case you get all the weights. Scale measures overall 15 1/4" tall x 13 3/4" wide x 7" deep. Small pan is 4 1/8" in diameter. Large pan is 7 7/8" diameter x 6 1/4" it's oval) Brass weights are 1, 2, 4 oz. Antique Excelsior Improved Brass & Metal Spring Balance Scale 48 Lbs
This auction is for an antique brass and metal Excelsior Improved Spring Balance Scale with markings up to 48 lbs. The front plate is brass and measures 8 1/4" long x 2" wide. With the hanging ring included at the top and the hook at the bottom it measures about 13 3/4" long. It has use marks such as scratches. Dings, wear and other marks and at the bottom of the scale it tends to bend downward and their is a small dent on the side there as well. Both the ring and the hook are rusted. The back of the scale has alot of wear to the black finish. Scrapes of missing paint, pitting, scratches, rust, dings, etc. Also the inside piece at the top(what is it called? a bolt? is very rusted and I don't think it will turn. not that it has too) but the rust on it has kept it from moving. Up for auction is a Henry Troemner antique balance scale. The finish is rough in some spots and someone has painted a date with initials on the inside. It is missing a knob from the drawer and the glass cover. Also. There is a small piece of trim missing on the front and a repair made to the top trim. Overall, it is in good condition for it's age. This balance was manufactured for use in the California gold fields in the mid-1800s. The tole. Oval metal case, measuring 6”L x 3” W x 1.25” H, features an American Eagle/Shield on the lid with“Miners Improved Gold Scale” and“Manufactured Expressly for California” printed above and below the eagle. The case bottom has a paper label stamped“Germany” The brass scale consists of a 5-3/4” beam with 2-1/4” pans suspended by chain. Eight brass weights are in the case; two ½ troy oz. weights, one each 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 DWTS(pennyweight) and one 2 grain wafer. You are bidding on a very nice vintage PUMA combination fisherman’s knife. Fisherman’s priest and counter balance scale. This old. Hard to find, combination knife was made in Solingen, Germany and is in very good condition. The ball on the end of the knife has seen some use and has some scratches and nicks but the black diamond cut handle still has the original in laid black color. The blade looks to have a few scratches but is still very shiny with no rust or pitting. The blade locks and opens crisply and securely. For use as a counter balanced scale the knife was hung by a lanyard with a fish hung from notches along the top of the blade. The notches along the top of the bla d é correspond to a weight written on the top edge of the blade. When the weight of the fish counter balanced the ball on the handle of the knife the weight of ... morethe fish was known. The notches and numbers on the blade are in excellent condition and the knife has the original lanyard. The knife weighs about 9 oz. Pictured is a Christian Becker Chainomatic Analytical Balance Scale that is in beautiful WORKING and LOOKING condition especially for it's age. Nothing is missing and ALL original- 1920's(easily museum quality) This would make a great gift for someone who appreciates antique scientific instruments that are so hard to find especially in such fine condition. These balances were the premier instruments used in labs for weighing in the gram to milligram range. It's made of Mahogany with a Black Glass base and measures 18" X 16" X 9" and weighs about 20 lbs. it comes with the original directions that while torn are still perfectly legible(see picture) The following is an addition to the original listing. C. BECKER ANTIQUE BALANCE c.1925 Offered is a Becker patented No.9 Chainomatic balance scale. This model was a total innovation in analytical balances. Allowing the user to weigh extremely small amounts of matter(under 100 milligrams) without riders or counter-weights. The graduated column has a chain operated vertical carriage in.001 incriments from 0.0mg to 100mg. The right exterior crank manipulates the carriage, which accurately lengthens or shortens the gold plated chain as needed to achieve equalibrium. Pan capacity is 200 grams, with a sensitivity of 1/20th of a milligram! Apparently this Chainomatic was originally U.S. Navy property, indicated by the brass Navy tag on the drawer. The enclosed Becker instruction pamphlet also verifies that the Navy owned at least two No.9 balances. The balance operates perfectly. And is simple to calibrate. ... moreThe balance case is beautifully fashioned from aged mahogany. Aside from a few scratches and and the unwanted surface wound on the drawer, the entire balance is otherwise undamaged and sound. All the parts are original to the balance including the surrounding window glass and the black plate glass base. The glass base has no flaws. The front glass panel is counter-poised, the rear panel is removable. Nothing has been repaired or has switched out parts from another balance. Many of the side crank wheels on Chainomatics are either damaged or missing, this one is intact. The crank should be safely stored in the drawer when ever the balance is moved around. Another nice feature with this balance is the AUTO-DEX movable index plate, operated via the front left knob. AUTO-DEX is another innovation, it reduces the time needed to weigh any given material. The case dimensions are 19"W X 20"H X 12"D. Weight is about 35 pounds packed up. Some original paperwork is in the drawer. As are two glass pan dishes. Medicine Balance Scale This is an accurate balance scale made in Japan more than 100 years ago. It was actually used at a clinic in Japan. On the bottom surface of the case it says it was bought in the 40th year of the Meiji Period(1907) The scale is inside the glass case in wooden frame. Which makes it less likely to be affected by airflow when substanceis weighed on it. This kind of scale is hard to find at the present day. Stunning Antique Analytical Balance Scale Including Weights in Working Condition
I am offering a stunning antique analytical balance. Pre-1930's, made in Germany and distributed by Cambridge Botanical Supply Co. Waverly, Mass. complete with weights and 2 extra pans. This scale measures approximately 17 inches wide, 17 inches high and 9 1/2 inches deep. The scale has one drawer. Other than in the back, the case is in excellent shape and has a beautiful patina. The back of the scale at the very bottom has some damage(see photographs) I could have easily repaired this damage, however, I wanted the buyer to see the exact condition of the case. Decorative neat old cast iron scale. Resembles those scales used in general store for weighing candy. Seeds, etc. The scale measures about 16" long by 7" wide by 6" high with the pan on. The base without the pan measures about 10” long by 5” wide by 4” high. The scale has a removable metal scoop pan. It is too heavy to be tin but I am not sure what it is made of. The pan measures approx. 12” long by 7” wide by 2 ¾” high. I can not find any markings as to maker. There are 4 weights that are not marked. I feel the scale is in very good condition. It was painted black with the gold pan by a previous owner. The pan has some some scuff marks. Again this is a decorative scale. Not made for actual use. It weighs 6 to 7lbs. Beautiful vintage white colored German compact beam scale for the trade. Could have been used in a candy store or other business that sells small items by weight. Includes a stainless steel holding pan that measures 7 1/2" in diameter and 1 3/4" tall. Very well made. The base and many of the components are cast iron and steel. The unpainted metal parts are stainless steel and include the beams the weights slide on and the weights themselves. The rough measurements of the scale are 10" wide x 7 1/2" deep and 6" tall with pan in place. Scale capacity is 5 kilograms. Top beam measures up to one kilogram and the bottom one goes up to 4 kilograms. There is locking lever which is engaged when weighing is completed.
