VINTAGE SARTORIUS - WERKE ANALYTICAL BALANCE SCALE IN SUPERB CONDITION
VINTAGE SARTORIUS BALANCE Offered is a vintage balance made in Gottingen. Germany by Sartorius-Werke. Florenz Sartorius started making balances around 1870, his company still thrives around the world today. This is a Model DP3. It introduced many innovative features, such as the air-damped oscillation reducer and the dial-a-weight selector mechanism. Pan arrest systems were common in those days, but an artificial source of reflected light used to improve balance ops was a quantum leap. In this case, the light source is aimed straight through the rear port lens, then passes through a small hole in the column. It continues to a set of mirrors and lenses, then finally to the viewing screen front and center. It's rather primitive by today's standards, but certainly displays sound mechanics. The original exterior 6V light source is long ... moregone, but fortunately it is actually not needed for the balance to function using conventional methods. A powerful little LED flashlight or a cable optic light source both substitute nicely for the stock lighting equipment. Viewing the screen is probably even brighter and clearer than with the 6V setup. Condition overall is flawless. Nothing has been replaced. Broken, repaired, refinished, or polished- everything is original. It has a 200 gram capacity(each pan) and is easily calibrated to 1/10th of a milligram. Assembly after shipping will undoubtedly require a slight re-calibration. All of the eight original sequentially heavier ring weights are present. These ring weights and the selection dial mechanism allow for weighing matter up to.999 of a gram without the use of additional weights on the opposite pan for achieving static equilibrium. Apparently this balance was once the Property of Long Beach CA, it's use remains unknown. I think it was made just after WW II, some 60 odd years ago. But did not get to me with the AC cord which unfortunately appears to be at least somewhat proprietary. The socket(which is partially broken if you look at the picture) has a striking resemblance to a normal computer style cord. But even after I whittled some of that type of cable off I still couldn’t get it to fit, the prongs don’t line up. So for want of a cord it is completely untested and NO warranty is offered. However. This is a nice looking vintage scale made in Germany. Its very clean for its age! I have no clue if this thing works or not. unit came from Texas A&M University. I did take many pics of the inside of the unit so you can view its contents. I did plug it in and when the ob-longed knob on either side of the unit is turned there is a light that comes on inside the unit and is transmitted to the front screen via mirrors from the back and the focus is adjusted by the little silver knob inside the doors on the back wall. All the knobs turn great and move things around inside. All the feet are there and adjust as they should. Glass is in great shape and not broke or scratched.
