Antique GEM No 5 Cast Iron Candy General Store BALANCE SCALE W/5 Brass Weights
You are bidding on a vintage Antique CAST IRON SCALE. In used condition. Solid& sturdy in good shape. The brass pan/scoop has three small cracks on the edges, I tried to show the largest one in a picture. From a doctors estate it was on display in his office& looks like it was refinished at one time. One end has a brass scoop& the other end has a flat cast iron pan. The Scale is heavy& measures approx 12 3/8" long x 3 3/4" wide x 9" tall. The base reads: GEM No 5. There are 5 different size Brass weights that fit into holes on the base that are marked on the top: 1/4- 1/2- 1- 2- 4. The numbers stand for ounces. EARLY 1800'S ANTIQUE HAND FORGED IRON AND BRASS BALANCE SCALE WOOD BASE WEIGHTS
This auction is for a very wonderful early balance scale made of forged iron and brass on a wood base. It comes with weights that are hallmarked. I am putting the scale in the 1800's category. But I feel that it could be earlier. The larger brass pan lifts out of the hanger which is wonderfully forged(see photos) and has ram's horn ends. The smaller brass pan is attached to the iron piece. Three of the weights are brass and the other three are iron. I have not researched the hallmarks on the weights, but that might give a clue to the date. The scale has nice patina except that someone cleaned the iron of the smaller brass pan, apparently when they polished the brass pans. It is unfortunate, but you can see the pitting in the iron and it is clear that it is indeed old iron. Both arms with pans on each side can be removed from the main ... morearms. The scale may be European in origin and may have been imported early on for use in this country, I don't really know. Also, I can't remember if I purchased the iron weights separately, but I know for sure that the brass one came with it. In any case you get all the weights. Scale measures overall 15 1/4" tall x 13 3/4" wide x 7" deep. Small pan is 4 1/8" in diameter. Large pan is 7 7/8" diameter x 6 1/4" it's oval) Brass weights are 1, 2, 4 oz. This auction features a group of 3 different scale weights. There is a large set. Ohaus, consisting of 14 different brass weights, the largest being 2000grams. There is a smaller set, unmarked, with 13 brass weights and the largest is 20grams. There are a total of 13 brass weights, and about the same number of much lighter silver colored weights. Finally, there is a set by Fisher that has a total of 9 weights, with the heaviest being 100 grams. None of these sets are entirely complete so we are selling all three together.

Stunning Antique Analytical Balance Scale Including Weights in Working Condition
I am offering a stunning antique analytical balance. Pre-1930's, made in Germany and distributed by Cambridge Botanical Supply Co. Waverly, Mass. complete with weights and 2 extra pans. This scale measures approximately 17 inches wide, 17 inches high and 9 1/2 inches deep. The scale has one drawer. Other than in the back, the case is in excellent shape and has a beautiful patina. The back of the scale at the very bottom has some damage(see photographs) I could have easily repaired this damage, however, I wanted the buyer to see the exact condition of the case. On the left side of the case, on the bottom the veneer is slightly lose and needs to be re-glued. The case is structurely sound and otherwise in excellent condition. The repair would be a minor one. Antique Apothecary Counter "Praecision" Weight Balance Scale w Avery Weights
This is antique scale of the type often seen during the late 1880 to about 1920 in apothecary. Pharmacy and small stores. This is marked with a trademark showing a balance bean scale arm and the words"PRAE" then a star and"CISION" which we have tried to find out more about but could not. The scale also is marked 10Kg the beam arm. We couldn't find any other marks. It includes a set of W. T. Avery weights as marked; 1 lb AVERY Ltd- inner stamp on lead looks like crown. G, and 9 can't make out the R, A21, 24, 25,27,not sure if this is 23 or 28)31,33,34 8 oz AVERY Ltd- inner stamp on lead crown. GR,9- several marks on bottom J21, 24,25,26,27,31,33,34 4 oz W& T. AVERY Ld- inner stamp on lead looks like 27.7. Crown, GR, not sure of what is below that, no stamps on bottom. 2 oz W& T. AVERY Ld- inner crown stamp. ... moreLooks like GR, stamped on metal bottom, C26 1 oz W& T. AVERY Ld- inner stamp- hard to make out. Looks like crown, GR, but possibly ER, 31, marks on base 19-3, 1953, 1954 1/2 oz AVERY-inner stamp. None bottom; crown,GR, 37 O, then D/1 one bell type weight marked 1 lb AVERY. Looks like Crown, ER, possibly 64. the height of the mast from the bottom of the base(from the table to the top) is approximately 28" Beam across approx 18" the pans measure approximately 10" The wood base is old and appears to be original. We could find no marking other than already stated as to the maker. Apears to be European. This was found in NH. We have left as found as some collectors prefer the original patina. I have taken alot of picture to show all the parts, it looks to be complete, but can not tell as I can't find any information as to the maker. Set of Antique Vtg Brass Scale Weights Seal Balance w Wooden Holder Apothecary
This set of brass scale weights came from an auction in Vermont. The seal on the back reads- Department of_ measures. Sealed, inspector, not detach or deface under penalty. Seal of the state of New Hampshire 1776. The seal is not complete, this is all I could make out. The smallest weight is missing. The weights are engraved on the top as follows- kilo(this one is also marked Z-1 HV? City I believe) 1 lb avd, 8 oz avd, 2 oz avd, 1 oz avd, 1/2, 1/4. There are use marks and some tarnishing. The wooden holder measures 8 1/8" long by 4" wide, and just under 2 1/2" high. The wooden holder has quite a few use marks, see the 9th picture.

The scale measures 32 3/8" long. 1 1/2" wide at center, 6 3/4" high at hook, and weighs 2 lbs. 9.6 ounces. According to the graduating weight markings, this scale will hold 200 pounds of weight. The scale is marked with the manufacturers name, but I cannot make it out. As you can see in the photos due to age the finish is gone from the iron but it is still intact with no cracks or separations. The two hanging weights measure 2 1/8" in diameter and both are marked 10 LBS. However, they only weigh around 1 pound each, could be that I am reading it wrong, so I have added a close up of marking for you to see. Large Antique Victorian English Brass Postal Scales Balance Rare Dumbell Weights
Postal scales were introduced in the mid 19th Century after Rowland Hill(the founder of the postage stamp) suggested that letters should be charged by weight rather than number of pages. After this. Most wealthy homes had their own set. This auction is for a large set that would make a wonderful talking point to any room. T he set has six rare brass dumbell weights from 1lb to 1/2oz. One of the 1oz weights is a replacement. A 2oz one being absent, as is another 1/2oz weight. The set has a polished hardwood base and four wooden feet. The scales measure 11" by 6" by 5.5" high. This is a heavy set and postage outside the UK will be high. This remains a highly collectable piece of history.

Rare de Grave Short Antique Brass Apothecary Pharmacy Balance Scales and Weights
In earlier times. We had to rely on passing or visiting apothecaries for our medicines. To dispense them, the apothecary used sets of hand held beam balances and weights. These had panes made of varying materials depending on the preparation being dispensed and the scales continued to be used in dispensing chemists until the advent of more modern weighing machines. This auction is for a superb and increasingly rare set of scales. The set was made by the renowned English manufacturer De Grave& Short. This was an old London firm. Antique Analytical Apothecary Gold Balance Scale Glass Case Weights & Extras
Not sure of the year on this scale. Manufactured by Arthur S. LaPine& company from Chicago. But I believe it to be complete. Everything seems to work as it should. Was told it is an apothecary scale that can also be used for gold. The balance operates and needs to be calibrated. It's in good condition for a piece that's almost 100 years of age. The balance case is in great shape and the windows are not broken or cracked. The entire balance is pretty sound. All the parts are original to the balance including the surrounding cabinet glass and the black plate glass base. The front glass panel raises to open the case. Nothing has been repaired or has switched out parts from another balance. Has a side crank. Plate inside says Seederer-Kohlbusch. Nc. Englewood, NJ. And service records.John P. Also included ... moreare 3 boxes of extras.In the first box is the original chain which is not connected to the scales at this time. 4 odd weights which include one larger one and 3 smaller onees. The third box is a spectacular shiny chrome plated set of weights in 8 different sizes. Also in the box is some more small weights and the original brass tweezers. The case dimensions are 15"W X 16"H(19" from top to bottom including the legs) X 8 1/2"D. Weight is about 35 pounds packed up. A bull's-eye type bubble level and adjustable feet insure proper set-up. No mass weights are included. However, they are easily found under this catagory. Shipping can be expensive. Depending on the distance to the buyer. This is a splendid example of a Victorian portable balance used for weighing out precious metals and other commodities and is complete with a nice selection of contemporary penny weights as shown. Including 10, 5, 3, 2, and 1 penny weights. The penny weight is the traditional troy system denomination used for centuries and still in use today, and these weights show the grain equivalent weights as well. Contrary to popular belief, there was never a point in time when the actual weight of a Penny coin coincided exactly with the Troy unit of weight known as the Pennyweight, but the similarities to the coinage system can be seen by the fact that there were 12 pennyweights to the Troy pound and 20 pennyweights to the Troy ounce. The balance itself is in very good condition and does balance well as illustrated in the leading picture. Analytical Balance Scale Weights- Apothecary- Chemistry- Pharmacist Vintage Ohaus fractional brass weights in Drachms and Scruples. Units are from early Bible times. But the weights are not that old: Set has 2. 1& 1/2 Drachm weights, 2, 1, 1/2 Scruple weights plus 5 wires(weights? that I believe are aluminum. These are straight, bent, 3, 4, 5 sided; perhaps representing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 units of something? The wires and 1/2 Scruple weight are stored in the compartment beneath the disc with red handle. Two Drachm weight has noticeable patina. Others may have tinges. The plastic case is a bit grungy and has a large crack in the lid, but remains intact. Cool science conversation starter! This balance scale measures 18" inches long 8 1/4 tall and is in good working condition. The pans have a ding or dent here and there from normal use. Cast iron, crow foot, balance scale with weights. This piece is very old and has a nice antique patina that would make it a great piece of decor for your home, bar or restaurant! This scale is marked"Howe" on the arm, and is stamped"5377" on the base. This is a very old piece that was likely used in a general store or by traders when it was new. The piece has a very heavy, cast iron base and platter with a brass arm and a number of hanging weights. This is a very cool piece and would make a great addition to any antique or cast iron collection! Condition: This scale is very old and shows signs of wear from use over the years. The platter is not sitting on the scale ... morecorrectly. But if you find the right spot for it to sit, the scale does work. It will need some adjustments and calibration to work perfectly. The cast iron base is oxidized and has some welding seams and cracks throughout. The piece has a flat black coat of paint that looks old, but may not be original. The weights may not be original to this piece either, but we are not certain. The weights are currently being held on the arm with a piece of wire.
