There are a few scratches and scuff marks on the casing, but it is otherwise undamaged. For more information on the cosmetic condition please refer to the pictures below. When plugged in the scale started humming. But the display never turned on. The sound was fairly audible and smooth, but there was no way I could test the scale. All buttons are in good condition and have good tactile response. When testing, the closest power cable I could find had a 16V 1.5Amp output, but the device only requires a 15V and 800mA output. Vintage Wm. Ainsworth & Sons Type FH Micro Analytical Balance Scale, Working!
Vintage Wm. Ainsworth& Sons Type FH Micro Analytical Balance Scale. Working! For your consideration. A very nice, complete(except for the light assembly, more on that below, and a weight set) and useable William Ainsworth& Sons, Denver"Magni-Grad" microanalytical balance scale, Type FH, Serial No. 30391, dating to roughly the early to mid 1950s I think. All parts are present and working: beam/pointer/reticle. Stirrups, pans/bows, and, though not original, a 5 milligram rider weight and a 1/2 milligram adjustment weight. Front sash cords are there and working, front door works fine and stays where you put it. Panbrakes work properly, arrestment mechanism works properly, rider adjustment mechanism works properly. The projection system works great, but some of it is not original: I custom constructed the actual light source ... moreusing a white LED and lenses, and a(funky looking but functional) switch inside which is automatically operated by the arrestment knob. The light source is powered by a single D-cell battery, also inside, mounted in a custom holder. The custom stuff is all contained inside and is not visible normally. Except the light assembly itself which is visible from the back. It all could be removed easily if you want to do that. see photos) Balance has synthetic sapphire knives& planes. Gold and/or rhodium plated interior parts. Obviously I cannot guarantee the accuracy or precision of this balance; it is super sensitive if adjusted that way. And should be capable of a few micrograms precision if you know what you're doing, have accurate weights(NOT CHEAP! a draft-free and temperature/humidity/vibration controlled environment for it, patience, care, and simple math skills. On the other hand. It makes a great display piece! It does show signs of normal use and some minor marks on the exterior paint. And there is a small chip on the front right edge of the black glass baseplate, approximately 1/4th inch wide at it's widest(see photos) It's not that noticeable, as can be seen

Ainsworth 5-Digit Digital Balance 86-4300 - Needs repair
When turned on. The weighing platform moves up a quarter of an inch, but the display only shows all sevens, as the photo shows. If you press down a bit on the platform, the display will go blank(leaving only the plus sign) and will revert to the sevens when the weight is removed from the platform. This makes me think that the voice coil weighing element is functional. A while back I took the cover off and was able to measure a variable voltage(with pressure) on the voice coil terminals. So, I believe that the fault is in the measuring circuitry somewhere. This is a heavy, high quality balance that would be good for repair or parts. Cosmetic condition is good, besides some scratches and a missing piece of the bezel from the tare button.

As would be expected from an assay/mining scale dated 10/1/95(which is written on one of the drawer bottom's, as seen in the 9th picture, and that we know would not mean 1995) Written next to the date are initials that appear to me to be JW. Scale also has 5144 marked in a couple of areas which could be the model number. There is another number that I found(19493) which may also be a model number. Or possibly marking the 19,493 scale made? Features include(but may not be limited to) Glass sides(and top) wooden box(although front glass is missing) and glass-lined floor bottom; all misc. measuring pieces shown on this glass bottom; 2 drawers. I bought this at an estate sale in Columbus Ohio at what appeared to be a dentist or dental instructor. I am selling it as is. But I will tell you that is appears to be in good working condition. All the weights are inside and they all go up and down on the balance beam as the dials are turned on the front of the machine. This thing is really a great piece just in studying the cog gears that add and subtract weights from the scale as the dials are turned. The weights go down to the size of just a thin hoop of wire. I am sure it will need some adjustments. I put a new bulb in it, and there is another spare on the back. There is a little bit of corrorsion on the inside metal part that the tray sits on. Doesn't appear that it would affect anything. I didn't try to scrub it off. Any questions please feel free to ask. This is the top of the line precision Lab scale. We were told it cam measure one flake of a cigerette ash. It can also be used for gold. The Wm Ainsworth& Sons company made the best of these type scales. The case is all metal with a black texture paint original finish with mino touch ups. The inside floor is Black Glass. The cords on both sides the front door are broke but sitll there. The covered weights work well. The instruments inside have the original gold plating. The feet are adjustable and made of heavy cast brass. And cleaned as you see them by previous owner. The large knob in the center is also solid cast brass and cleaned also. The key on the far right is bent out to the side but still clears all the other keys when activated.
