Patent Dates are Jan 6 1885. Jan 29 1889 and May 19 1891! This measures about 13" high by 13 1/2" long. I cleaned this just a tad to get the loose dirt and dust off. Needs new steel tension bands and may be missing a bolt. Not sure if the small pieces, shown, go to this. I have a band, as shown, that is the same width, that went to a weedwhacker. May be able to use. I have never had or seen one of these so I put this together the way you see it and do not know if it is totally correct. This looks to be perhaps 90% or more complete! TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE IT IS COMPLETE AND WORKING PROPERLY. in good condition( very good by my standards) but it does have a few moisture related issues in the finish. Slight rust on exterior, that I did not try to clean up. I will leave that to you. I didn't weigh anything on it but will and repost a revision to that extent when I find my weights.

This is a Classic Vintage Torsion Balance Scale Style 4555. We are pleased to present you a vintage torsion balance scale for your consideration. The Torsion Balance company was established on September 7. 1897. The Corporation had its principal place of business at 92 Reade Street, New York, NY, and a plant in Jersey City, NJ until May of 1949 when both the New York office and the Jersey City plant were moved to New Jersey as part of a new factory which was erected in Clifton. The company has continuously manufactured and sold Torsion Balances. The principal markets for the Torsion Balances were retail druggists, who used them in compounding prescriptions, and users who needed a precision weighing device that could be used under the adverse conditions. Apparently in shipping, something loosened inside, some type of bar that supports the two arms is out of place so the scale does not work. This is Model DLM2-1 Scale from The Torsion Balance Company from Clifton, New Jersey, this scale was Made in U.S.A. and is No. 171950 and has a 120 g Capacity. This scale does not have its weights! The scale appears to be complete with all the knobs being present, the dial on the front turns freely and is numbered from 1 to 10, it is also makred with a letter"G" on this dial. The lid on this scale lifts open and has both the silver colored pieces for the trays to sit on. The piece on the inside for balance is present as well, it does appear that around the balance piece shows signs of potential rust. This scale is gray in color, the plastic window like features are present with no damage, however the gray paint is ... morescratched in several places. Someone has stuck a sticker on the side of this scale and I have not made any attempt to remove it in fear of damaging the paint. Here at auction is an old"THE SPRINGER TORSION BALANCE CO" SCALE from NEW YORK PATENTED AUG. 15. 1882 STYLE 269 NO. 2614( this number I am not sure if I can read it clearly) this information is on the metal piece adhered to the inside on the bottom of the scale. 11 1/2" x 6 1/2" x 5" total measurement all glass enclosed. Panels of glass are all intake the hinged lid is 2" glass pieces on top front and sides of lid and the lower part of the scale. When you lift the lid there are two silver metal bases that the round metal holders sit on. These round metal holders is where the pharmacist would measure the crude drug etc. to mix into a prescription. The bases are all that you can touch as there is glass all around them. The frame does have screws on the corners to take it apart so that you could get inside. there ... moreis on one side a small handle attached to a rod that slides in and out of the glassed area and has a small device on it that is a weighted ball on one end and a two pronged like fork on the other end. this can slide anywhere inside and touch the balancing part of the scale. I am not sure what purpose it has) there are two horizontal needles that have red points on the and they go up and down depending on what is put on the metal holders. and should be balanced( you make the red needles balance by turning or adjusting the front knob at the bottom of the scale in the middle. There is also a measuring device that ranges from 0 to 8 grams and 1 to 5 decigms( I think that is the spelling that I see on the measurement thing inside? The black frame is a heavy metal or iron or a pot metal? and some black paint is chipped off from use and wear. Could be repainted easily but might take away from the original look. Look at the last photo there is a small gap or small piece of the glass in the front corner that is missing or it was just made that way, it is in the lid part and not very noticeable. there are some rusty like corrosion spots on the inside bottom and on the underside. there ar

The plaque reads: THE TORSION BALANCE CO. STYLE 269 NEW YORK NO. 56320 PAT. JAN. 8-85. JAN 22-89, MAY 19-91. The approval label from the Department of Weights and Measures is from the city of Detroit. The case measures 12” wide by 5 ½” deep by 6 ¼” tall. I believe this scale is a 120 gram capacity, though there is no tag to verify. This scale was used for pharmaceuticals. All of the parts work. The glass within the case has broken in two places, and both hinges on the lid are also broken. The nickel-plated case has rust and corrosion, oxidation and pitting inside and out. This scale comes from a local estate.The previous owner was a jeweler and watchmaker.I do not know what he used this scale for.It has not been used for quite awhile.I know nothing about it or how to operate it.I do not know if it is accurate or not.There is a black coating under the glass where the weights and trays go and some of it is missing on the upper left corner.All the knobs and scale move freely.There only three weights that came with the scale.I could not find any other weights.No cracks on the glass.The scale measures 11 1/2" long by 4 3/4" wide by 8 1/2" tall.Look the photos over good before you bid as you are bidding on this scale as is.

Here is a vintage balance scale from The Torsion Balance Co. Style 1700 New York No 46112 Pat Jan 6-85 Jan 22-89 May 10-91. This scale is for parts or to restore. There are 2 holes on the top of the base that I believe some sort of rod and dish would go on so that you could place the item to be weighed on. The scall is dirty and needs a cleaning. I believe it is a spring scale. The balance part moves freely. The top metal piece that shows you if the item is balanced is a little bent. The metal has some minor surface rust. I am not sure if the scale was meant to look like it was marblized. Or if that is some sort of splatters. There is some sticker residue on the metal. A rare, very clean, lightly used and well-kept Torbal ST-1 Torsion Balance scale in perfect working condition. I suspect this unit to be of 1970s vintage, but I am not certain. Functionally equivalent to an Ohaus Dial-O-Gram. With suspended pan and Specific Gravity platform; from what I have seen this model was priced a bit above the similar Ohaus(about 20% and features a torsion beam pivot system instead of the knife-edge bearings commonly used. It's capacity is from 0.01 grams to 310 grams, to a nominal precision of 0.01 grams(1/100th gram) Also unlike many similar mechanical balances. All weights are mounted on the beam, so no loose extra weights are needed for weighing objects above 100 grams. It has a"dash-pot" damper which ... morebrings the pointer to rest very quickly. This auction is for a pair of Vintage Pharmaceutical Torsion Balance Scales. In Glass Casing and Metal Frame. They are both manufactured by the Torsion Balance company style 269 one is number 30058 and the other looks like 12400. 30058 is in better shape than 12400 although both are in poor condition. These scales can be used for parts or repairs, or even projects. They weigh about 9 pounds each and measures 11.5" x 7.5" x 5" approximately. 30058 has cracks on the both sides in the glass and is missing the glass on the front cover. 12400 has breaks and chips everywhere in the glass and has a piece of glass that has fallen our completely but I do have the piece. Torbal DX-2 Pharmaceutical Torsion Balance/Scale - Excellect Condition!
I am a pharmacist. I purchased a very large lot- the entire contents of a pharmacy. That lot had 2 identical scales. This being one of them. The other is currently used as a professional scale in my own pharmacy. This scale is operating exactly as a non-balanced scale should. When the arrest arm is disabled. The scales stay at center. Once weight is added to either side, then removed, the scale does NOT return to center. This is exactly what mine was doing too. To get my own scale to pass state inspection. It had to be re-balanced and certified. This cost me $98. The technician came to the pharmacy to do the overhaul, re-balance and certification. This scale will need the same service. In fact, talk to anyone who uses a professional scale or check any resource and you'll find that any scale of this style that is moved from one building ... moreto another must be re-balanced. The arrest does NOT protect the unit from this activity. ALL SCALES of this nature MUST BE RE-BALANCED when they are moved across any real distance; only a kid-glove move from one counter to another would be ok. Anything would require a re-balance. Other than the need for re-balance. This unit is BEAUTIFUL! Completely intact. No cracks in the glass at all. The top is perfect. The dial moves beautifully and the arms move fluidly up and down as they should. The arrest is also working perfectly. Thanks to the torsion weighing mechanism the TORBAL is sensitive. Independent of wear, unaffected by dust or dirt, and adjustment is permanent— all of which adds up to extra-long, useful, maintenance-free service.
