NICE ANTIQUE BRASS POSTAL SCALE WITH WEIGHTS Circa 1880 - USA Shipper
Sweet British postal scale. Solid brass with wood base, including 4 weights. The two larger weights(4 oz and 2 oz) are original; the two smaller I am adding, but they are not original and they do not fit the holes perfectly, although they are perfectly usable. The postal rates engraved into the weighing platform date between 5 October 1871 and 21 June 1887, so that should be range of the age of this nice piece. That should make this item between 126 and 142 years old. The manufacturer's hallmark engraved into this scale is. Windle& Blyth" On the other side is engraved, Warranted accurate" As might be expected with an item this old, this piece does have a few condition issues. The screw that is right in the front on the bottom appears not to be original, as it does not screw all the way in. The largest weight hold is lined ... morewith felt, but the other two have no felt lining. The plate on top with the postal rates appears somewhat bent. The wood has its fair share of dings and marks, although I have not tried to refinish it in any way. I think the two largest weights probably are supposed to be nested, but they look better the way I displayed them here. It also features a tin tray and a properly floating balance hinge. This very clean scale is in good condition with no damage to the cast iron. The scale is mounted on what appears to be a solid walnut base. The Eastman Kodak Company art deco logo design is part of the actual scale. It comes with two complete sets of weights one in ounces and grains and the other which appears to be in grams. It also has its original box with instructions pasted inside the lid. There two pans included as well which you can see in the photographs. CONDITION As mentioned above this scale is in surprising good condition. There is some pitting on the metal. It functions perfectly including its nulling adjustments on each side of the scale.
