Florenz Sartorius started making balances around ... more1870, his company still thrives around the world today. This is a Model DP3. It introduced many innovative features, such as the air-damped oscillation reducer and the dial-a-weight selector mechanism. Pan arrest systems were common in those days, but an artificial source of reflected light used to improve balance ops was a quantum leap. In this case, the light source is aimed straight through the rear port lens, then passes through a small hole in the column. It continues to a set of mirrors and lenses, then finally to the viewing screen front and center. It's rather primitive by today's standards, but certainly displays sound mechanics. The original exterior 6V light source is long gone, but fortunately it is actually not needed for the balance to function using conventional methods. A powerful little LED flashlight or a cable optic light source both substitute nicely for the stock lighting equipment. Viewing the screen is probably even brighter and clearer than with the 6V setup. Condition overall is flawless. Nothing has been replaced. Broken, repaired, refinished, or polished- everything is original. It has a 200 gram capacity(each pan) and is easily calibrated to 1/10th of a milligram. Assembly after shipping will undoubtedly require a slight re-calibration. All of the eight original sequentially heavier ring weights are present. These ring weights and the selection dial mechanism allow for weighing matter up to.999 of a gram without the use of additional weights on the opposite pan for achieving static equilibrium. Apparently this balance was once the Property of Long Beach CA, it's use remains unknown. I think it was made just after WW II, some 60 odd years ago. No effort to examine or repair these was done here, and staff retirements put this on the back burner for a couple of years.The readability of these is 200g x 0.00000g The glass is intact on one balance- the sliding glass parts are missing on the other. Here is a very nice antique carbide railroad lantern made in 1956 by A. Sartorius. Wuppertal. It has been well used but shows no signs of having been abused in any way. There is some paint missing here and there from normal wear and tear that you would find on such a piece. Every thing on this lantern functions as it should. It is complete with its original red and green glass on the sides and the clear glass up front. The spring loaded doors on the sides work perfectly. One great thing about this lantern is that you can remove the reflector for easy cleaning-that is a feature not often found on these lanterns! The only thing I can find wrong with it is that 3 set screws holding the swivel clamps in position are missing, this doesn't affect functionality at all, so you can decide to replace or not, probably under $5 to replace. These are about $5000 new. I've listed it for 1/10th that price. So if you can use it, its a real bargain!
