Vintage Galileo Sartorius Milano Analytical Balance
Offered is a vintage analytical balance made by Officine Galileo in Florence. Italy. Front and rear glass panels open upward, the side glass panels that open rearward. The front window rises gently with a vertical counterweight system. The two pneumatic bells serve to dampen the oscillations of the arms and further shorten the time to reach equilibrium. The damping is due to the slow flow of air between the two cups during oscillations. I believe the base is black agate. The mechanical loading of the masses in fractions of a gram is accomplished with a lever system controlled by the two concentric knobs with the numbers at the top right. The fractions obtained vary in increments of 10 milligrams, the measuring range is 1 to 999 milligrams. On the base is mounted the mechanism for scale reading projection consisting rear lamp group optical ... moremicroscope and screws for adjusting the table and the movement of the scale. The original exterior 6V light source is gone, but fortunately it is actually not needed for the balance to function using conventional methods. An LED flashlight(used for picture) or a cable optic light source could substitute for the stock lighting equipment. Condition overall is Excellent. Nothing has been replaced. Broken, repaired, refinished, or polished- everything is original. It has a 200 gram capacity(each pan) and is easily calibrated. All of the eight original sequentially heavier ring weights are present. These ring weights and the selection dial mechanism allow for weighing matter up to 0.999 of a gram without the use of additional weights on the opposite pan for achieving static equilibrium. Included are a full set weights that can be hung from the hook suspended under each bell. The exact age is not known. However, the balance is at least 56 years old based on the calibration sticker dated 2/27/58. It is in truly remarkable condition considering its age.
