ANTIQUE Cast Iron Ohaus Double Beam Pharmacy Gram Scale/Balance This old Ohaus Double Beam scale/balance has a 200 kilogram capacity. Scale measures 13 3/4 inches long by 7 1/2 inches high with the weighing pans measuring 5 5/8 inches square. The weighing pans are made of what we believe is porcelain. With a matte finish. It does not appear as if the pans are removable, and we did not want to tamper with it, for fear of damaging them. There is a metal plate on the front that says: Newark Scale Works- Newark. NJ- Ohaus Williams, Brown& Earle- Philadelphia, PA. Has what appears to be a calibration lock/tag attached that has the letters LG. Scale looks as though it may have been repainted from the original black coloring to its current maroon color; this is not a recent paint job. And may have been done around the time of original purchase. ... moreThis is not evident unless the scale is turned on its side to reveal the underneath, where maroon paint drips can be seen. The only marking we were able to discover is a Patent number which is stamped into the arm of the support beams under the pans. Pat# 1782612. This patent was applied for on December 4. 1928 and awarded on October 22, 1929 to Gustav Ohaus for his Trip Scale. The piece is in what appears to be overall very good condition for the age. With no major dents or rust. Pans are in good condition with one minuscule flake underneath one pan at the side. It is not noticeable and is only being mentioned for the sake of accuracy. We are not overly familiar with this item. Other than what is visible to the eye and we are able to describe. The former owner told us that he believed that the scale was once used in a pharmacy counter setting. We are not certain how accurate the scale is or how to test it. There is one attached sliding weight which does not appear to be removable. But no additional weights. Because of its exceptional visual condition, the scale would make a great display item.
