Vintage Hanson USA 500 Gram Pharmacy - Kitchen Scale
This is an excellent example of a vintage Hanson USA of Chicago. 500 gram graduated pharmacy or kitchen scale, circa 1940's. All parts are original, in working order, and in excellent condition for age. The face of the scale is graduated into 1 gram increments with an easy zero reset and measures 6 5/8 inches in diameter. All index marks are clear and easy to read. The weighing tray is 5 1/2 inches square. Overall, when completely assembled the scale is 9 1/4 inches tall x 6 5/8 inches wide x 6 inches deep. The weight of this piece is 4 pounds. There are some scratches in the paint and minor rust spots, which is to be expected for the use and age of this piece.

The swinging arm lock works fine and clasps the box shut tightly, no splits or cracks in the wood case. But shows the obvious wear such as patina, faint scratch or wear marks. Great patina on the brass plate. The interior was lined with black with purple inlays for the brass weights. Weights show major patina/greening. They will need to be cleaned. All the brass weights are there and is complete. The silver milligrams are not complete, missing 7 different weights, I only have 6. I have the glass magnified weight that lays over the milligram weights to keep them all from falling out. The scale seems to be well balanced when the two 100 gram weights are added but my guess is that the scale is more for decoration than for actual use. ANTIQUE Cast Iron Ohaus Double Beam Pharmacy Gram Scale/Balance This old Ohaus Double Beam scale/balance has a 200 kilogram capacity. Scale measures 13 3/4 inches long by 7 1/2 inches high with the weighing pans measuring 5 5/8 inches square. The weighing pans are made of what we believe is porcelain. With a matte finish. It does not appear as if the pans are removable, and we did not want to tamper with it, for fear of damaging them. There is a metal plate on the front that says: Newark Scale Works- Newark. NJ- Ohaus Williams, Brown& Earle- Philadelphia, PA. Has what appears to be a calibration lock/tag attached that has the letters LG. Scale looks as though it may have been repainted from the original black coloring to its current maroon color; this is not a recent paint job. And may have been done around the time of original purchase. ... moreThis is not evident unless the scale is turned on its side to reveal the underneath, where maroon paint drips can be seen. The only marking we were able to discover is a Patent number which is stamped into the arm of the support beams under the pans. Pat# 1782612. This patent was applied for on December 4. 1928 and awarded on October 22, 1929 to Gustav Ohaus for his Trip Scale. The piece is in what appears to be overall very good condition for the age. With no major dents or rust. Pans are in good condition with one minuscule flake underneath one pan at the side. It is not noticeable and is only being mentioned for the sake of accuracy. We are not overly familiar with this item. Other than what is visible to the eye and we are able to describe. The former owner told us that he believed that the scale was once used in a pharmacy counter setting. We are not certain how accurate the scale is or how to test it.
