Antique Beam scale "50" Newark? weights, bars, hooks, some rust
It is very hard to read but I think I see the number 50 and WARK which I take to be the end of Newark. Weighs 7.5 pounds. Apparently you would hang weights on the empty end while the hook end held up chained platforms or trays. We only have what you see in the photos, this came from an estate sale. The long bar is about 20.5 inches long.

BARRY& WARMINGTON BALANCE BEAM SCALE. WEIGHWELL WORKS, LIVERPOOL Berry and Warmington. Weighwell Works, Liverpool was registered as a limited company in 1921 at Weighwell Works. The original directors were Charles Berry and J.W.S. Warmington(1880-1979- apprenticed with Avery 1896) With a head office at 59 Byrom Street, the company opened branches in several parts of Lancashire and North Wales, and in 1927 they took over the businesses of Edwards in Liverpool and Reuben Sutcliffe in Manchester. The company continued to grow rapidly, and in 1938 Averys purchased the business as a going concern. Many branches were opened, including one in Birmingham, ostensibly competing on Avery's home ground. This scale dates from the 1920's or earlier. I think the porcelain tray may date later than the scale. My reasoning is the markings on the ... moretray date from the mid 1920's while the scale itself looks to date from the late 19th century to the turn of the century. The scale is in good condition and is the only imperfection of note is the ding on the side of the shaft. Which doesn’t seem to deter from the performance of the scale. It comes with the one ball weight only. It is made from cast iron and brass with one porcelain tray as seen in the pictures. It is very large. It measures overall about 31 1/2" tall x 25" wide and 10" deep. The plate measures 10" in diameter. It weighs about 22 pounds. The arm is marked CLASS B& TO WEIGH 7lbs. 1852 antique apothecary pre Civil War Brass BALANCE BEAM SCALE WEIGHT 4 lb size
This solid brass scale balance beam weight weighs exactly 4 pounds(stamped"4 LB" on top) and measures 5 3/4" high. Since these scale weights had to be very accurate. The Dept. of Weights& Measures would check the various public establishments including drug stores every year to make sure the weights they were using"measured up" so to speak. This example shows that is was stamped by W&M for the years 1852, 1856 and 1857 to be accurate and there are other date stampings difficult to read. To see a very similar example go to pg.327 in"THE BRASS BOOK" the first photo above is from this reference) A decade or so ago I use to be able to find these early-mid 19th century scale weights but they have become near impossible to find anymore. This consists of a beam piece with a sliding weight on the left and a hanger piece on the right where you could place the sample of wood. There are two charts, copyright 1918, to calculate the moisture percentages mounted with the scale and they have handy little brass markers so you can keep your place. The cast iron base is painted black and stenciled with the words, Troemoid Scalometer; The National Dry Kiln Co. Indianapolis, Ind. The base looks dusty and has a great aged patina. There is a little tag at the bottom of the upright post that says, Henry Troemner, Philadelphia. A LARGE antique cast wrought iron Steelyard balance scale used in the early times to weigh items up to 300 pounds and is in great shape. Steelyard Scales have been used for centuries and this great piece of history allows for the use of two different weighing functions with separately embossed graduated weight ranges. You use one set of hooks on one side with balance indicator for weight ranges between 0 lbs to 80 lbs. Then you turn the scale over and use another combination of hooks with balance indicator for the weight scale of 80 lbs to 300 lbs. The small beam weight slides back and forth until the balance indicator(s) read center. Giving you the weight. Measures 31 inches long.
