Hand in-laid wood, marble-topped, dual brass pan apothecary balance(sometimes incorrectly called a“scale” It was made in France by the"Factories of the Mulatière- Lyon– House of Beranger"Google translation) probably in the mid-to-late nineteenth century(1800s) It is a very attractive example of a heavy. Solid, very well-made balance for use, or as an impressive part of any collection(see pictures) Balance is in excellent working condition considering its age! The stout knife edges and swing-arm internal mechanisms allow smooth operation of right and left pans. Both pans appear to be original to this unit! How often does that happen? We believe that because they both have the same stamped maker’s marks motif’ crown and 5-pointed star) as mentioned for the top center of the brass bezel discussed above. ... moreThey have a nice patina and do not have splits or cracks at the edges as many this age do. The balance dual“arrow” indicators are easy to read and work smoothly. The brass bezel surrounding the arrow indicators is embossed with“USINES DE LA MULATIERE” across the top arc; PORTEE” and“5 KIL” middle left and right) and“ A NE MAISONE BERANGER” across the bottom arc. A“LYON” medallion with a crown and a 5-pointed star is centered at the top. Corrosion is not that bad for a piece that could be 150 years old or more. The glass appears to be original and is clear with one vertical scratch. Which is not readily apparent unless viewed up close. The marble is soft white with natural color variations. It is not cracked and has a few small stains that are not readily visible when the pans are in place. It has 2 keyed holes in the bottom so that it fits securely on the base(it only fits one way– if the support stems rub. This balance scale came from an auction in Vermont. It needs to be restrung. The bowls may not have been originally with this balance beam. The balance is made of metal. It measures 9 1/2" long. There is some rust, please see all pictures. The bowls are made of brass. They measure 5" in diameter. There are quite a few marks on the bowls. Each bowl has a small hole, please see pictures eight and ten. The first bowl has a pin hole right in the center. It appears that someone has soldered the rim of one, please see the eleventh picture. I am unsure why. The bowl appears to be intact.

Antique THOMPSON SCALE CO. FINE SCALE BECKER& SONS COARSE SCALE IN CUSTOM CASE BY A.E. MEEK TRUNK CO This auction features a rare antique set of scales in a custom case. These scales were made for the West Lode Gold Mining Co in Latrobe. CA in 1920-21. They were ordered and provided to the West Lode by the Justinian Caire Company on Market Street in San Francisco. NOTE: Justinian Caire founded this company in the 19th Century. He was also well known for purchasing Santa Cruz Island and maitaining a huge ranch on the island. When these scales were made and purchased by the Justinian Caire Company, his heirs were running the company since he had passed away years before. There is an envelope included that shows who had the scales made and who they were delivered to and, what appears to be, the date of the transaction. The THOMPSON SCALE ... moreis a beautiful and well engineered piece of equipment which is mostly made of solid brass. Within the brass fittings are two small levels to make sure that the device is on an even base. There are adjustments on each brass foot that can be adjusted for assuring that the device is level. The box is made of a hard wood and includes a front drawer which contains the working balance beam and other. On each side of the box are small knobs which were used to hold the balance beam steady prior to using. The front of the box above the drawer is a framed glass cover that slides up to be removed from the box when being used. It appears that even the screws that hold the box together are brass. The BECKER& SONS Coarse Scale has a small"plaque" on it that reads"Made for J. Caire San Francisco" This scale includes a brass covered beam that is fastened to the top of the box by two screws. The brass shows some wear; but, the scale works fine once it is put together. The box is made by A. E. Meek Trunk& Bag Co out of Denver, CO. Vintage Wooden Voland& Van Zelm Precsision Balance Beam Scale. I believe this would date to the early 1900's& possibily earlier. In outstanding condition and you will search long& hard to find a better example. The patina on this piece couldn't be better and I have only cleaned the dust from it. I think everything works but to be honest I don't have any knowledge of these types of precision instruments! All the metal scale parts are of brass construction. I'm not sure what type of wood it is built from. If I had to take a guess I would say mahogany judging from the color. I have done quite a bit of research on these types of scales& have not found another that had the beam& other parts made of all brass. Most have some brass and some stainless steel parts in them. I think it is an earlier example than most ... moreof the ones I found. As the pictures show it comes with two sets of weights in fitted wooden boxes. The one on the right is a newer set and the one on the left looks to date to about when the scale was new. The older set is marked Becker's Sons.Rotterdam. This Christian Becker"Chainomatic" Analytical Balance Scale is in very good condition. There are a few minor dents on the wood frame(mostly on the top cross piece of the sliding door) but the mechanical parts are in excellent condition. The scale pieces have been disassembled due to the scale being moved. The scale received its US patent(1591802) on July 6. 1926. I found evidence that these scales were used into the 1950s. These balances were the premier instruments used in labs for weighing in the gram to milligram range. I believe the frame is made of mahogany with a black glass base. The case measures 16-1/2" wide(without the 1-1/2" handle) x 17" high x 9-1/4" deep(without the 1" knob) and weighs about 20 lbs. The weights and manual are not included. The serial number is B-42847. Vintage Scale of Justice balance that has 10 hanging prisms on the top part and 3 on the bottom. Heavy brass with a marble base. Glass is a green depression type with the plates having a loop pattern on the edges. Balance measures about 21" tall and 20" across. It is decorative only and does not weigh items. There is a screw lever on the backside which allows you to move the top crossbar into any position you want to balance the scale plates. From what I could find out Fenton made it glass part in the 1950's and the had another company make the metal part which has brass and brass finished( metallic) metal. There are no chips or cracks to the glass. We have this beautiful Henry Troemner Analytical Balance Scale for your consideration. Unfortunately there are some missing parts and damage however this is still a great piece of history. With some TLC this would be a wonderful piece to add to a collection. Included with the glass and wood encased scale are all the pieces shown in pictures. Antique Apothecary Pharmaceutical Henry Troemer Balance Scale, circa 1900
Up for auction is an Antique Apothecary Pharmaceutical Henry Troemer Merchant's Scale that was recovered from an old Mom and Pop New Orleans drugstore that closed in the 1950's and which has been in storage since. This interesting scale has a wooden oak base and a heavy marble top and is in working condition. It measures 19.5 inches long. 9.25 inches wide and 5.25 inches high. The pans are metal(probably nickel plated copper because a magnet doesn't attract them) and measure 8 inches in diameter. The marble top has a few small chips along the outer edge and there is a small spot of red paint on the front. It has just enough wear and patina to give it character. If this scale could talk.
