Old Fashioned Balance Weigh Scale in Wooden Case
This weigh scale in a wooden case as shown measures 8 1/4" x 5 1/2" by 1" high. The inside of the case is velvet lined and has indentations for all the items. There are 10 gm. 5 gm, 2 gm and 1 gm brass weights. Everything has an item except for one where one of the weights(I think it is.5 gm) is missing. The cross bar is stamped Made in India. The little blue case has lighter weights. I don't know how it works. The stick piece as thread and screws into the case. I will leave that to the new owner to know or figure out and am selling it at a low price"as is" Please note that as shown there is some damage to the wood in the upper left hand corner of the outside of the case. Not sure of the year on this scale. Manufactured by Arthur S. LaPine& company from Chicago. But I believe it to be complete. Everything seems to work as it should. Was told it is an apothecary scale that can also be used for gold. The balance operates and needs to be calibrated. It's in good condition for a piece that's almost 100 years of age. The balance case is in great shape and the windows are not broken or cracked. The entire balance is pretty sound. All the parts are original to the balance including the surrounding cabinet glass and the black plate glass base. The front glass panel raises to open the case. Nothing has been repaired or has switched out parts from another balance. Has a side crank. Plate inside says Seederer-Kohlbusch. Nc. Englewood, NJ. And service records.John P. Muller.New Rochelle, NY. Also included ... moreare 3 boxes of extras.In the first box is the original chain which is not connected to the scales at this time. 4 odd weights which include one larger one and 3 smaller onees. A cannister with one set of apothecary's drachms scruple& grains weights. No. 58. The second box is a whole other sets of rounded scales measuring 2 1/2" in diameter. The third box is a spectacular shiny chrome plated set of weights in 8 different sizes. Also in the box is some more small weights and the original brass tweezers. The case dimensions are 15"W X 16"H(19" from top to bottom including the legs) X 8 1/2"D. Weight is about 35 pounds packed up. A bull's-eye type bubble level and adjustable feet insure proper set-up. No mass weights are included. However, they are easily found under this catagory. Shipping can be expensive. Depending on the distance to the buyer. This chemical scale would be a great addition to any antique collection and will display beautifully where ever fine instruments are appreciated. According to McNerney’s“ANTIQUE IRON– Identification and Values” 1989 Collector Books) this type of scale is called and“off center balance” The author further states“Style in use since England’s reign of Edward; made in many sizes; arm is the“yard” and the sliding weight the“pea” The scale McNerney is referring to and pictured in her book(p. 23) is nearly identical to the scale we are offering here. Our scale is approximately 24 ½” in length and weighs about 6 ½ lbs including the weight. The scale is a combination of cast iron and smith forged wrought iron parts. There are no maker’s marks on the scale. The weight has a mold embossed letter on it which appears to be a“W” But we can’t be sure. Other than the shape of the large end the scale has no decoration. This is no surprise as it is a functional no nonsense piece. We would guess ... morethat the scale could easily be 150 years of age or older and that it is likely American. It is in good condition with a fine old patina to the iron. There is a very shallow dip to the rod or“yard” halfway down when viewed horizontally but that’s it. We see no evidence of historical repairs and the piece displays very well. This is a nice old example of this type of scale and suitable for the true collector. A pretty interesting vintage device used in the textile industry I'm assuming to measure the weight of yarn. I know nothing about this device or how to use it. I did gently press down on the hook and it did move a needle. It is missing one of the leveling feet as shown in the picture but it can still be leveled just use that foot as a constant. It even has a leveling bubble as seen in photo 2. Just above the name plate. Also one of the glass panels is cracked, it's the one on the back of the swing out door. Also shown in a photo. The heavy cast case is in good condition with no cracks. It measures about 10 1/2" high. 9" wide at the base and 4 1/2" deep also measured at the base. Will be double boxed for safe shipping. The front is worn and the letters and measurements are hard to read. A smudge of a worn area on the upper right side. Some dents on the edges of the bottom of the scale. Some paint loss on the back. For your consideration is a Unique. Vintage RRS Brass Balance Hanging Scale. This lovely scale is a great decorative item and conversation piece. It is marked RRS. MAX 200 GR. It is marked in 1 GR increments with numbers every 10 GR. It measures fairly accurately although you need to compensate approx 27GR. Could be balanced out with counter weight. Vintage Marble Top Apothecary Balance Scale w/ Brass Trays-Possible Troemner
This is a Vintage Marble Top Apothecary Balance Scale w/ Brass Trays. I believe it is a Henry Troemner because i have seen a couple of identical ones with the markings on the trays but I can not find any markings.It is in generally good condition but but I cannot tell you if it is accurate or not and it probably needs to be calibrated if it is to be used.The scale is 18" long-7 1/2 deep and 5 1/2 inches high to the marble top. It looks like someone started cleaning the marble but did not complete it. I have left it untouched for the buyer to do what they want. If you have any questions please feel free to ask.
