Antique Lot 4 Microtomes ++ American Optical & A.S. Aloe 185mm 120mm T6513 U2827
RECENT ACQUISITIONS This lot is for the exact items photographed. It is for an all Antique Lot 4 Microtomes a handle. Stand and three original boxes. 3 of the 4 Microtomes are from A/O, which is American Optical, the 4th Microtome is from A.S. Aloe and also has the marking that it is for bone. There are 2 that are 185mm long and 2 that are 120mm long. The two A/O that have stamped id numbers on them are the T6513 and the U2827. The third one is not stamped on the handle. And is a 120mm that was less used and maybe newer. It is marked A/O on the side of the blade. The 4th Microtome by A.S. Aloe of Germany, is in its original box and is marked on the outside of this peach colored box as: Cat. V-59910-C Microtome Knife, Complete(which it is not) 185m/m Paraffin. The one handle does fit all of the A/O Microtomes. The only one it does not fit ... moresnuggly. Is the A.S. Aloe. The handle will screw in easily on one of the sides(both have holes) but not tighten securely. While we mention holes, all have holes on both sides of the blades, except the 120mm less used A/O Microtome. The stand will hold the 120mm Microtomes. All Microtomes have varying degrees of rust. but are still sharp. One box has tape on top with name. Two of three boxes have locks/clasps. 1 is missing clasp. The 185mm T6513 Microtome has a lot of rust on the handle, but not much on the blade area. The 185mm from A.S. Aloe has very little rust on the blade portion, while still having some on the handle too. The 120mm A/O has very little at the blade and most is on surface above the cutting area, while lat, the unnumbered 120mm A/O has one patch of rust on the surface, but not at the blade. Bottom line. you should be able to use any one of these four blades. Because the rust that does show, is mostly cosmetic and not at the blade sections. Automatic Laboratory Microtome Model 880 by Spencer Lens Company
The Model 880 was one of Spencer's most perennially successful offerings. Being marketed from before 1914 until at least the 1950s, well after Spencer became a Division of the American Optical Company. It was referred to in Spencer catalogs before 1940 as an"Automatic Laboratory Microtome" and thereafter as an"Automatic Clinical Microtome" When accessorized with the CO2 freezing attachment(as in this auction) it was designated as Model 888. The instrument at auction here is an early version. Certainly dating to before the mid-1930s. Based on the Gothic Script used to engrave the Spencer Company Name(see image) it was probably produced before 1920. There is no serial number. The auction includes the 880 microtome plus freezing attachment(i.e. making it equivalent to Model 888) plus a holder that allows the use of single ... moreedge razor blades. I will also include a CD with a newer version of the 880/888 user manual. And descriptions from early Spencer Catalogs. The microtome is complete and original except for: 1. The freezing attachment bears the AO name. So it dates from after 1935. The fittings needed to attach a CO2 tank to the freezing unit are NOT INCLUDED. 2. The razor blade holder bears the AO name. So it dates from after 1935. An actual microtome knife is NOT INCLUDED. 3. The knife handle is NOT ORIGINAL. It is a replacement. Please see the image. The microtome is clean. And appears to be in working condition although I have not used it to cut thin sections. Both the knife movement and the advance mechanism operate freely.

We purchased this system new and used it for one project(about 6 weeks total) and it has been stored in our lab under a cover ever since. A s seen by the pictures. The entire setup is in excellent condition, and honestly looks like it is brand new. All functions on the controller work properly during both manual and automated operation. All mechanical features of the microtome function properly and all movements of the cantilever are very smooth/fluid as intended. There are no signs of wear, rust, or damage anywhere on this piece of equipment. The stage, cantilever arm, cantilever clamp, chuck, chuck holder,and knife holder are ... moreall in excellent condition, and all adjustment screws and control knobs turn very easily, as intended. There are two complete chuck/specimen holder assemblies that are included with this unit(see pics) The Leica StereoZoom 6 binoculars/ microscope is also in excellent condition. The binocular assembly can be raised. Lowered, and pivoted left and right. The zoom range is 0.67X- 4.0X. The binoculars also have a pair of Bausch& Lomb 15X W.F. eyepieces currently installed. The binocular assembly is mounted on sliding rails to allow for easy front to back adjustments using the knob on the left. The binocular assembly also has two fluorescent lights that are mounted directly above the stage to illuminate the specimen being cut. Vintage Bausch & Lomb Optical Plain Microtome Blade/Knife 90mm
I found this among some of my grandfathers things recently. The B.L.O.CO. on the handle indicates that it was made by Bausch& Lomb Optikal Company Gmbh in Germany sometime between 1925 and 1945. I have found photographs of similar microtome blades by B&L from 1907 and 1922 but this one has a more strongly made handle for sharpening/honing/stropping. I have not seen any other B&L microtome blades listed on ebay or anywhere else so I will assume that this is fairly rare. The blade is 90mm with an 85mm cutting edge. The wooden box is felt lined.
