Automatic Laboratory Microtome Model 880 by Spencer Lens Company
The Model 880 was one of Spencer's most perennially successful offerings. Being marketed from before 1914 until at least the 1950s, well after Spencer became a Division of the American Optical Company. It was referred to in Spencer catalogs before 1940 as an"Automatic Laboratory Microtome" and thereafter as an"Automatic Clinical Microtome" When accessorized with the CO2 freezing attachment(as in this auction) it was designated as Model 888. The instrument at auction here is an early version. Certainly dating to before the mid-1930s. Based on the Gothic Script used to engrave the Spencer Company Name(see image) it was probably produced before 1920. There is no serial number. The auction includes the 880 microtome plus freezing attachment(i.e. making it equivalent to Model 888) plus a holder that allows the use of single ... moreedge razor blades. I will also include a CD with a newer version of the 880/888 user manual. And descriptions from early Spencer Catalogs. The microtome is complete and original except for: 1. The freezing attachment bears the AO name. So it dates from after 1935. The fittings needed to attach a CO2 tank to the freezing unit are NOT INCLUDED. 2. The razor blade holder bears the AO name. So it dates from after 1935. An actual microtome knife is NOT INCLUDED. 3. The knife handle is NOT ORIGINAL. It is a replacement. Please see the image. The microtome is clean. And appears to be in working condition although I have not used it to cut thin sections. Both the knife movement and the advance mechanism operate freely.

ANOTHER ONE OF JACK'S AUCTIONS! US BUYERS ONLY. Measuring about 12" x 9" x 8" tall) and weighing about 33 pounds. This vintage American Optical Microtome appears to be in GOOD CONDITION. When I bought it, it was covered in dust and I cleaned it up the best I could. You may want to do some further cleaning in those hard to get at spots. Cosmetically, there is normal wear from use and one unusual issue. The metal A/O name tag on the machine(seen in my 5th picture above) is split in half. Somehow it got sliced. Operationally, everything seems to work as it should. However, the hand-crank wheel pictured in my last picture does not sit tightly on it's shaft. There is a screw(seen in that picture) that tightens the wheel to the shaft but it is tightened as tight as it will go.
