This is a Swift microtome model# MA501. No. 69152. I don't know the year of manufacture on this item. Made of cast iron and chrome brass parts. The microtome weighs 3.5 pounds. All mechanisms work excellently. The clamping mechanism has a knurled knob and the dial is turned in 1000th inch increments and is locked in place by a ratchet. The specimen is clamped in place and advances upward manually as you turn the dial. A sharp razor is brought across the smooth surface to shave off a section of your specimen which can be placed in a watch-glass of water and the process repeated. This RARE Bausch and Lomb microtome is made of cast iron and comes in a wood box. I do not know if the box is the original or someone designed it. There is the No. 4894 stamped on the plate. The name Bausch& Lomb Optical Co. Rochester. NY is stamp is also on the plate. The blade case has the same name but with New York and Chicago underneath. I do not know if any parts are missing except the blades. The tray appears to be copper on the bottom but silver inside. There moving parts and the screw pieces can be tightened and loosened. But if you were to clean the accumulated paraffin off you might be able to say that. As is it looks very nice. As nice as a microtome probably needs to look. The rotary crank action is smooth and the advance does work and it is responsive to the control of the thickness of the cut. So about the only thing I cannot say about it functionally is whether the thickness dialed in produces the same thickness of cut. I was also able to run the sample holder back in when it got too close to the blade. That is the extent of my testing and NO warranty is offered. However. Fisher Scientific 860 Sliding Microtombe Up for auction is a used Fisher Scientific 860 Sliding Microtome that is in good physical condition. The unit is a little dirty but nothing that would prevent it from operating normally. All the mechanics work well. The adjustments slide and turn easily. Please refer to the pictures provided below for more details on the physical condition of this item. We used some WD-40 on this unit to get it operating properly. Due to this. The wooden board probably soaked some up and may smell like it somewhat. NOTE TO BUYER: This unit does NOT come with a blade. When we first received this unit the part the(we assume) holds the blade was seized in place and did not move. We lubricated as much of the machine as we could and were able to get everything to move smoothly and properly. We were able to adjust the slice ... moresize and the unit moved appropriately with the movement of the blade holder. One thing that should be noted though is when the slice size is set to its maximum. The arm that moves the lever for the sample position doesn't always engage. I am including an AO profile C knife with the unit, it is unused and unwrapped since the last time it was sharpened.
