PLEASE READ IT IN ITS ... moreENTIRETY! The good news- what I have. Which is what is shown in the pictures, is in pretty good shape. Typical for these things it was apparently left to sit untouched for quite some time. So when I got to it the sliding block on top wasn’t even willing to consider moving. I have had these before where once you let some oil soak in finally it breaks loose. This one took a lot more convincing. So the finish on the sliding block is a bit the worse for wear on both ends from progressively more aggressive hammering. Was afraid it might break. But it didn’t. I didn’t hammer the block directly. But it still roughed up the finish a bit. Now it slides OK. If you want to work over the finished areas a bit more I am sure it would reward you with an even smoother stroke. I will let you decide what is appropriate in that department. But the sliding block being stuck was never the bad news. Now that it is unstuck that’s part of the good news. The bad news is that the microtome is missing some key pieces as you can probably see in the pictures. Most obviously it is missing the knife holder. Someone on ebay is offering one now for perhaps a bit too much. I made a lowball offer that was rejected. Oh well. From what I understand there are at least two different kinds of blade holders for this thing. And it doesn’t make sense for me to pay top dollar for the one the other seller has only to find out you need the other one anyway. In addition to the missing blade holder it is also missing the advance lever actuator that should be attached to the back of the sliding block on top. Each pass the actuator should engage the trip lever on the back that works the sample holder. Why that would be missing I have no idea. But it is. If you were talented you could perhaps(PERHAPS) fabricate something to take its place. Alternatively I guess you could manually trip the thing after each pass b

American Optical 860 Sliding Microtome For sale- an American Optical 860 Sliding Microtome. This is a good news/bad news listing. PLEASE READ IT IN ITS ENTIRETY! The good news- what I have. Which is what is shown in the pictures, is in pretty good shape. Typical for these things it was apparently left to sit untouched for quite some time. So when I got to it the sliding block on top wasn’t even willing to consider moving. I have had these before where once you let some oil soak in finally it breaks loose. This one took a lot more convincing. So the finish on the sliding block is a bit the worse for wear on both ends from progressively more aggressive hammering. Was afraid it might break. But it didn’t. I didn’t hammer the block directly. But it still roughed up the finish a bit. Now it slides OK. If you want to work over the finished areas ... morea bit more I am sure it would reward you with an even smoother stroke. I will let you decide what is appropriate in that department. But the sliding block being stuck was never the bad news. Now that it is unstuck that’s part of the good news. The bad news is that the microtome is missing some key pieces as you can probably see in the pictures. Most obviously it is missing the knife holder. Someone on ebay is offering one now for perhaps a bit too much. I made a lowball offer that was rejected. Oh well. From what I understand there are at least two different kinds of blade holders for this thing. And it doesn’t make sense for me to pay top dollar for the one the other seller has only to find out you need the other one anyway. In addition to the missing blade holder it is also missing the advance lever actuator that should be attached to the back of the sliding block on top. Each pass the actuator should engage the trip lever on the back that works the sample holder. Why that would be missing I have no idea. But it is. If you were talented you could perhaps(PERHAPS) fabricate something to take its place. Alternatively I guess you could manually trip the thing after each pass b

American Optical 860 Sliding Block Microtome For sale- an American Optical 860 Sliding Block Microtome. I have frequently heard of these referred to as the Cadillac of microtomes. And as they are no longer in production they are highly sought after. For those of you that search ebay longingly to find one. You may recognize this one. I have had it listed for quite awhile as missing parts. And apparently those parts are very hard to come by. I finally had someone offer me these parts. And so now I would consider the microtome to be reasonably complete. Actually better than that. As the purchase not only added the regular knife holder to the equation, it added the long knife holder as well. The regular knife holder is missing one of the thumb screws that secures the knife in place. But I am guessing that worst case you could replace it with ... morea bolt, and hopefully you could find a matching thumb screw. I had assumed that you could simply take one out of the long holder if you weren’t using it and put it in the regular holder. But the threads are different oddly enough so they are not interchangeable. In the interest of getting the listing back up and running I have simply added two pictures to the ones I already had posted. The first of those is a shot of the back of the unit with the missing advance trip finger attached. When I first tried it out the advance mechanism didn’t want to go back into place. But I gave it a few shots of WD-40 and now it does return. A bit slower than it should perhaps but faster than you are likely to be making strokes. And no doubt with some additional lubrication and use it will get back to stride. That picture also shows the stop that was missing on the end in place. That is now included as well. The last picture shows everything that has been added to the equation since the original pictures were taken. The guy disassembled the knife holders in order to pack them more compactly to fit in my mailbox. I think I have the regular holder back together correctly. Minus the one missing thumb

Up for auction today is an American Optical Spencer Microtome 860. All of the parts on this unit that we have available are working. We are unsure if there are any little missing parts due to lack of expertise. We lubricated this machine and it slides very well. There may be some rust in crevices but it looks shiny and nice on visible parts. Please examine our pictures to insure all of the parts are there. Hello Everyone, One Spencer Lens Co. microtome. Offered at auction. Found at an estate sale. Please take a good look at the pictures to determine condition and originality. The microtome is labeled“Spencer Lens Co. Buffalo. N.Y. I do not know the year of manufacture or model number for the item. The toothed wheel of the height adjuster reads. 1 Tooth = 2 Microns” The microtome weighs 19 Pounds and 15.2 Ounces. The microtome is in an as-found condition. Has surface rust and corrosion on most parts. It has not been cleaned or modified by me. The lowering and raising mechanism does move freely. The sliding block mechanism moves.
