I put in a 9 volt battery(not included) in the clean battery Compartment and then tested it on two things, one is the Microwave as seen in the picture, the second w/out a picture is off a fan. In both cases I did see lighing up of lights, more lights lit as I moved it closer to the objects. Measures 3 1/2 inches wide, 5 5/8 inches tall and 1 1/2 inches deep at the top, less at the bottom. Made in Ohio, USA. No idea of age or how to actually use this, but clearly works, while not in the pictures, I did switch from low range to high and got a reading as I got really close to the objects.
