Up for auction is this Vintage 1950's Survey Meter/Geiger Counter by Atomic-Electronic Associates. Top is very dark green and has a headphone jack along with several knobs. Meter and counter(light) This is a piece of history. Information taken from the website of ORAU.org: Output: no speaker but jack for headphones. The neon light labeled"Count" flashes every time a pulse is registered. Detector: Six Victoreen 6306 thin-walled GM tubes with bismuth cathodes. Ranges: 0–20, 0-40, 0-200 and 0-400 counts per second Size: 5” x 7 1/2” x 6” Batteries: one 1 1/2 volt"A" battery, one 15 volt(Burgess K10) one 67.5 volt. The meter actually was measuring when this was first found and dials moved around so I believe the batteries had just enough juice to get it going. Up for your pleasure is an older model Geiger counter. Model 5 made by Ludlum Measurements Inc. in Sweetwater Texas. I don't know how old it is. But I took the batteries out of it a few weeks ago because I needed them for my flashlight. The 2 d cell batteries were working fine in the counter at that time. I took a close up of the battery compartment and you can see it's clean with no corrosion. The unit has audio on/off switch. Eberline Geiger Counter with DT-53B/PDR-27 window probe (a working unit)
This working Geiger Counter is a hobbyist assembled combination of an Eberline 3212679 laboratory grade instrument and an ex-military"RADIAC DETECTOR DT-53B/PDR-27" probe. The meter has four ranges of scaling and an earphone BNC connector is on the front panel. All scales. High voltage and threashold sensitivity are independently adjustable. The probe has a manually shiftable window cover which clips to the probe body in both open and closed positions. This is an uncalibrated meter. It will run for a very long time on 5"D" size flashlight cells. Photos two shows the background reading and photo three is the indication from a pair of radioactive lantern mantles. A very slight adjustment of the high voltage can be made. If more sensitivity is needed. The probe cable is about 55 inches long. And permenently attached inside ... morethe unit. Goldak is another one of the literally hundreds of companies that attempted to keep up with the demand for prospecting equipment during the Uranium rush of the 1950s. Most of them either folded or transitioned into other types of instruments by 1960 when the large government bonuses were discontinued. Detectron. One of the most prolific manufacturers was founded by a man who had worked for Goldak but left when they refused to go into the Geiger counter business. After seeing his success they followed suit.
