Bendix CD V-742 Dosimeter Cold War Civil Defense Fallout Shelter This bid is for the Bendix CD V-742 pocket dosimeter pictured. I obtained it in Los Alamos. New Mexico. The CD V-742 has a measurement range of 0-200 Roentgens. The serial number indicates this dosimeter is from the Cold War era, SN 0600794. Background: The pocket dosimeter is a fountain pen sized scientific instrument with an eyepiece you look into at the top of the dosimeter and a charging contact at the bottom. To read the dosimeter you point it at a light source and look through the top. You can see a scale with a conductive fiber hairline indicator. The fiber moves across the scale when it is exposed to radiation. And indicates the amount of radiation absorbed by the device since the last time it was reset to zero. A dosimeter is reset by charging it with a dosimeter charger. ... moreWhile it is being charged, one can adjust the charger knob so that the indicator on the scale reads zero. How it works: The dosimeter contains a small ionization chamber with a volume of approximately two milliliters. Inside the ionization chamber is a central wire anode. And attached to this wire anode is a metal-coated quartz fiber. When the anode is charged to a positive potential, the charge is distributed between the wire anode and quartz fiber. Electrostatic repulsion deflects the quartz fiber, and the greater the charge, the greater the deflection of the quartz fiber. Radiation incident on the chamber produces ionization inside the active volume of the chamber. The electrons produced by ionization are attracted to, and collected by, the positively charged central anode. This collection of electrons reduces the net positive charge and allows the quartz fiber to return in the direction of the original position. The amount of movement is directly proportional to the amount of ionization that occurs.

For sale at a fixed price is this cold war vintage Civil Defense Radiation Meter. It is designed to function together as a set and it consists of a Bendix Dosimeter Charger Model 906 CD V 750 and a Bendix CD V-138 Radiation Pocket Detector. The detector is placed on the charger to read. Recalibrate and charge up. Inside the charger runs on one flashlight battery(not included) This one has a scale of 0-200 Milliroentgens. The dosimeter does function with the charger and displays the scale. We have not tested it with a radiation source so we're not sure if it holds a charge or accurately displays radiation exposure and we are selling it as a collectible and curiosity. Condition is nice. Up for your consideration we have this Surplus Preppers Bendix Personal Pocket Dosimeter CD V-742 w/ Pocket Clip. The CD V-742 was a direct-reading(self-reading) pocket dosimeter that measured exposures from 0– 200 roentgen(R) The 1959 revision of Technical Bulletin TB-11-20 Radiological Instruments for Civil Defense identified the CD-V-742 as one of three civil defense dosimeters. The other two being the CD V-138 and the CD V-730. According to the Bulletin, the CD V-742 superseded the CD V-740. Four years later, the Handbook for Radiological Monitors(April 1963) stated that the CD V-742 had replaced both the CD V-730 and the CD V-740. It is somewhat odd that a document published in 1959 would imply that the CD V-742 superseded anything given the ... morefact that the first CD V-742s were procured in FY 1961. At least according to the FY 1961 annual report. Quoting CPG 1-30: The dosimeter provided for general operational use is the CDV-742 which has a measurement Range of to 200 roentgens. The dosimeter shows the total or accumulated amount of gamma radiatio to which it has been exposed starting from the time of recharging(or zeroing) the Pen. If you've been following along. You know that we've been selling things from my uncles estate of which comes these 3 items. My uncle was an electronics collector who collected a little bit of everything. He also took meticulous care of his things and these items are no exception. They were found in his attic wrapped up in cloth baby diapers of all things. They were stored away with no batteries in them so the battery box is corrosion free. REAL nice cosmetic condition. They look to have never been used. I am not an electronics expert but I opened the manual, included, and did some reading trying to figure out how to test the Geiger counter. Installed a couple fresh D cell batteries, hooked up the headphones, turned the knob to 10X as the booklet instructed me to do and could hear a rather loud hiss with the needle moving to 0.5 or ... more300. I opened the cover on the wand and waved it across the test area but got no change in the gauge. Later was reading on the net about testing and the article I read stated that the test area was only good for 15 years at which point I went back to the book which said the same thing so I assume the test area is no good. This is as far as I got with the testing. I can tell you that my uncle didn't keep junk around, was a very meticulous, well organized person so I assume these are not junk. They appear as though they have never been used however with my very limited knowledge I cannot say if they work or not. Comes as shown with everything in the pictures of which there are lots below so if on a mobile device, wait until you get to your desk top to see them. For your consideration. I have this Bendix Corporation CDV-750 Model 5B dosimeter charger. This dosimeter charger was manufactured for the United States Government, Office of Civilian Defense to be distributed to municipalities for use in radioactive fallout shelters during the Cold War. This particular unit came from the Maricopa County Department of Emergency Management in Arizona. Cosmetically this unit is in good used condition with minor scratches chips or rub marks in the paint. there is an area in the paint where it appeared that a rubber band imbedded itself into the paint(view photo) There has been no internal corrosion from leaking batteries. I have function tested this unit and found it to be operating. The charging contact area lights up and adjusts the scale in the dosimeter pens. These are all used Bendix CD V-742 dosimeters(the pictured dosimeter is one of those in the set) I checked them with my Jordan Model 750-5 Dosimeter Charger and found that they were responsive and able to be‘zeroed’ at the time of listing. However. As with any'Cold War'era radiological detection device. These should be seen as‘collectible’ items and I make no warrantees whatsoever as to their reliability and functionality.
