SOUTH BEND 16 ENGINE LATHE: I've used this machine for many years. It's a champ. Nothing beats a belt driven spindle for thread cutting, you get really smooth threads with no'artifacts' from the drive gearing. Despite this machine's age it runs very quietly(with the lead screw disengaged you barely hear it running at all) Hand scraping marks are visible on the ways at the tail end, less so at the head end. There are no breaks and no repairs to the castings. This machine has not been abused but shows signs of normal wear. HISTORY AND USE: I've owned this machine for close to 25 years. It's never seen much production work being used mostly as a tool room lathe to make forming rollers and metal spinning mandrels. We've also used it plenty of times to support maintenance work in the shop and to develop parts for ... morespecial projects. The lathe is very stout and well built. Using good sharp tooling if you dial a.025" cut, you get an.025" cut in brass& alum and.0235" 025" in steel. There is some backlash in the cross slide. I don't find it objectionable but you may want to drop a fresh screw and nut in to eliminate it, these parts are readily available at reasonable cost from a number of sources. Thread cutting is a job on this lathe. Internal or external it just does a great job. If you are serious about tooling up this machine(or one like it) Check out our other auctions over the next month or so, there will be a number of lots of nice Aloris type tool holders, insert tools, tool post grinder, collets, chucks etc. I've never been able to find a serial number on this lathe. I've searched in all the places it might be to no avail. I've been told"that's impossible" by a number of sources which I see as normal because we're dealing with the'impossible' all the time, right? Haas CNC Lathe SL-30T SL 30 year 2000 Metal Metalworking NO RESERVE! NR!
NO RESERVE! You're looking at a 2000 Haas SL-30T Lathe. I'm a mechanical engineer and I bought this lathe about 2 months ago to produce a set of parts. Unfortunately I have realized I'm really not a machinist. And I have decided to have an outside shop produce the parts instead. So now I must sell the lathe. I will probably sell at a significant loss since I simply don't have the time to complete my project, so I suppose my loss is your gain. All major systems on the lathe are functional as far as I have been able to observe. Although I have not checked the programmable tailstock or tool setter arm but I assume they work. Chip conveyor and coolant pump are included(chip conveyor wiring has a small bit of frayed insulation but should not affect operation) X and Z axes jog normally through their full ranges and the tool turret ... morerotates properly. This Haas lathe came from a factory that makes pots and pans. They had used it to trim off the unfinished edges of pots, so it was used for repeated operations for some time. It looks to be a good machine, basically fully functional, but the axes have some noticeable play or slop, especially the Z axis. I had planned to replace both the X and Z ballscrews(and possibly linear guides) but I simply don't have the time at this point. I believe this is all that is needed to bring the machine back to full precision. The spindle feels smooth and normal. The factory it came from was using it directly before I got it, so they have informed me that all major systems work. The original auto-opening-door mechanism is no longer present but was replaced at some point with an air-powered pneumatic cylinder system. This system is not hooked up anymore. But I will include the air valves(still connected to the control) and the pneumatic cylinder if you would like. The door wheels have been replaced with heavy duty rails and slides. Recently, I have bypassed the door-is-open switch to demonstrate operation. Reconnect this switch system to ensure safe operation. Features: Ha
