Vintage Great Lakes Whirlaway Fishing Pole 1950's great condition
I bought this at a local flea mkt some years back. How it works is that the line is on the inside& you click the winder back once to flip the bail to release the line on the inside. I have it displayed in my man cave wall along with some other fishing reels. I am not sure of the dates of production. But believe it to be throughout the 1950's. and that was 1953. This combination rod and reel was produced by Great Lakes Products. 8655 Military Ave. Detroit 4, Michigan. In late 2005. Several Whirlaways in both the older and the newer models have appeared on eBay. These combo's in this condition have been going over $300 in these sales. Zebco Ocean Side Med-Heavy Action Spin Combo Open Face Rod and Reel
Here up for auction is a super Med-Heavy Zebco rod and reel. I bought two and she didn't like fishing. Go figure. Listen. I baited it and slung it out and before it could catch a fish she thought throwing rocks in the water was more fun. Like I said. Go figure. I have the exact same rod and reel and since I have hooked around 100 trout and bass and love the way it works. The Zebco ocean side rod is a med-heavy so it can be used for salt or fresh water fishing. The rod has a little scratch on it and that's all that's wrong with it. I like the sturdyness of the cast and the slight pull when it has the small trout on the other end. The reel is a Sportsfisher 450 XR and is smooth and clips with ease after the cast. the reel also has the high speed ball bearing self centering crank that is also left or right handed. The drag control ... moreis easy to master for whatever type of fishing you do. The rod is a 76-45 7 ft. 6 in. Med-Heavy. Line wt. 12-15 lbs.lure weight 1-4 oz. That's excellent for big bass in fresh water to 3 to 5 footers in salt. Like I said I have the same rod and reel and have done a little of both with mine and am totally impressed with the combo. Great Lakes Imperial Whirlaway Fishing Rod - Brown
This rod is was made in Marysville. MIchigan in the 1950s(my best guess) and is about 68 inches long assembled. It is in working order but is missing a handle knob and a screw in the base(see the second picture. I will mail it in three or four pieces(the handle section comes apart) depending how it best fits in the triangular box the post office has. Mailing costs are $12.00.
