Thats a pretty general statement. But it's also the reality of our sad Walmart priced/disposable society. Except for a scant few like Yost, the vises being manufacturer today are 99% Chinese made. Pot metal junk) Even the once mighty Wilton has ruined their reputation with Chinese sourced pot metal vises sold at Lowes. Its NOT a Wilton- at least not the ones you remember. I have pics of"new" Wiltons broken in half after a few uses. Even their pro line is nowhere ... moreclose to ones made in the 70's back. A quick google search will uncover DOZENS of"new" Wilton bullet vises with mounting feet broken off. The quality of the metal isn't there any more. As a mechanic my world revolves around impact wrenches and bench vises- This is a beautiful little vise. Jaws are 3" opens to 5" and it has both a swivel base and anvil back. It was found in a workshop that had been closed since the late 70's. It looks like it never saw much use. Add a new coat of paint or put it to work as is. I haven't cleaned or painted the vise- sweat equity" keeps the prices low. The jaws are nice and tight and in excellent shape. Almost perfect faces on each with no serious scars or damage. This would be a great vise for the bench downstairs or out in the garage. HUGE vises are great too. But NOT FOR EVERY JOB. Large vises 5" jaws and larger are actually cumbersome to use on small items. NOTE.Im pretty leniant with grading on used vises. Folks. WILTON VISE 1750, 5" NEW JAWS, VINTAGE, CLEAN!
Wilton introduced the Tradesman series in the early 70's. This is one such model. This early model as you can see from one of the photos had a hallow base and it has tin pipe jaws. A number of pieces are not original to this vise. The base. Jaws, lock downs underneath with carriage bolts, swivel handles, side stickers, and spindle handle and finger savers are not original to this vise. There is no dust cap in back and looks like Wilton's Cadet from years previous, The base of the vise itself shows weld marks however its sitting on top of a modern swivel base able to rotate 360. The long 3/8" HD replacement swivel handles will lock this vise down tight. This is a Beautiful Vintage Desmond Stephan Simplex S wivel Bench Vise. It's a model# 31S- Steel Slide- with 3 1/4" Jaws. The Vise was a Wood Craftsman's Shop(Barn) Find in Original Condition. Made in the U S A/ The Desmond Stephan MFG CO/ Urbana Ohio. The company is still in business but sold off it's vise business back in 1964. The Model 31 S(S for Swivel Base) was first produced in 1929 with claims of being a better vise due to the strength of it's Solid Steel Slide. The slide was cast of solid steel and then milled out for the vise screw. The remaining gray color on the vise indicates it is the Professional Machinist Model. The home model was painted red. UNUSED? vintage Desmond Stephan SIMPLEX 3.5" swivel bench vise PERFECT JAWS!
PLACE YOUR BID NOW! You wont find a nicer vintage Simplex 33 anywhere! This swivel base vise was either babied its entire life or never saw much action. All I had to do to this one was clean off a little rust and polish the handles. Then squirt it with some fresh paint! As you can see in the pictures the jaws only have some minor scratches, otherwise they look unused. This is a rare find. The vise is a quality vintage MADE IN AMERICA gem. It was manufactured by the Desmond Stephan Mfg. Co. of Urbana, Ohio. They are still in business today but have long since discontinued the manufacturing of vises. I would guess this vise to date somewhere between the 1940's and 1964, when Desmond Stephan stopped making vises. It has been lubricated and it's ready to be put to work. Vintage 1933 Craftsman No. 5215 Swivel Bench Vise 3 1/2" Jaws 18 Lbs Made In USA
I hope I look this good at 80! This thing. While clearly being a vise that saw work, is still in fantastic condition. The action is slippery smooth and the jaws meet up squarely. I found it very impressive that the splitter/chisel hardie has remained with this vise through its nearly century long journey. Do you how many early 20th century vises I've seen with the original hardie before? Absolutely zero. I'm just stunned it's still present and in really nice condition as well. The patent date stamped into the side of the slide is March 14. 1933 I repeat the same restoration procedure pretty much every vise auction I post but nothing in my methods really changes. I took it down to bare metal and gave it a good inspection. Other than skin-deep. Expected work marks there was no damage and no repairs have ever been performed. I painted ... moreit with a color called Deep Metallic Cobalt Blue and it's very handsome to me. I did bake the paint on and I believe it should hold up decently. The photos are pretty close but it may seem a tad darker in person. No paint was applied to any friction surface. All threads were cleaned and chased. This vise is 100% and ready for a long life of work holding. I did not apply any lubricant to this vise. If you don't agree with me here just let me know and I'll be happy to put some synthetic grease on the main-screw before I ship it. First off. The action is very nice on this vise and you won't notice the grease being gone. The reason I don't like to add grease is here is because of this style vise. It's called an exposed screw vise. That means you can see the main screw because it isn't located within a hollow slide. With the screw out in the open and greased it will catch and hold every piece of dust, metal shaving and dirt that comes its way. That will soon lead to worn threads and stubborn action. I recommend just blowing off the screw every once in a while and you won't ever see any trouble. I personally believe this vise to have been originall

There is some rot on the base feet because it was sitting on a concrete floor. Has 2 vise with wood threaded shaft. Don't think either slide rods are original. Vintage / Antique Disston USA Triumph Saw Tooth Setter and Saw Vise Set
This vintage. Or possibly antique, set( two pieces) is a saw blade vise that attachs to the work bench and a Disston USA Triumph Saw Tooth Set Tool. The vise is 12" and holds the saw blade with a roller you tighten and clamp to a table or workbench. The Saw Tooth Setting tool is just over 7" and is used while the saw blade is held securely in the vise. Both pieces have been stored outside and are rusted. I am not a tool person and am selling these for my dad, so I cannot guarantee that they work. All of the moving parts still move.
