This is a Very Heavy Number 2 Morse Taper Live Center@ 5 3/4: long from a Vintage 9" South Bend Workshop Metal Lathe with a 9" swing and 3 foot Bed. It is Serial#55177 Catalog No. 405-Y. Made by South Bend Engine Lathes In South Bend Indiana USA. The previous owner told me the lathe was from 1937 but I don't have verification of that. It is worn pitted and somewhat rusty with some nicks on the edges but in decent working condition and priced accordingly. Local pick-up available. It does not appear to be morse taper, but it is very close to Brown& Sharpe taper. Over 2" of the Length of the taper it drops approx. 082"or maybe.083" in diameter, Brown and Sharpe is typically about.085" on the smaller B&S sizes, maybne the big ones are different? Otherwise it might be a Jarno Taper. Dimensions. 5" Hardinge 3 Jaw Chuck & FaVor #3mt Live Center
I used this 5 inch chuck for utility work. Saving my Buck chuck for the close work. It still ran fairly true the last time I used it. I retired in 2009 and can't really remember the numbers. Sorry but it has no chuck wrench. The spindle thread is the 2 3/16-10 standard Hardinge threaded nose. I know it fits theTsugami as well as the Hardinge chucker because that's what I used it on. It will NOT fit the Logan 2 1/4-8 spindles. The#3 Morse Taper Favor Live CeTnter was purchased new around 1965 and still works well. There is no play in the bearings and still has a lot of hours left on. The nose could probably use touching up but it has worked fine for me. I think it was made in Switzerland or France. It is not marked.
