Vintage Rigid Collet/Tap/Tool Holder Grinding Fixture
This was used as a grinding fixture on a 1940's-50's Delta Toolmaker Grinder in a local machine shop. Secured to the grinder with a magnetic chuck. This fixture is NOT quick-change, NOT compatible with modern CNC rigid tapping machinery, so I have to think"rigid" in the context of this fixture refers to something else. The fixture does not appear to be shop-made, but there are no manufacturer's marks for further identification. The clamping fixture is cast iron and consists of a 2-8 threaded cap that screws over the collet and onto the fixture body. The cap nose is tapered to hold in the collect/tap/tool. Eight(8) 3/8-24 holes are evenly spaced around the cap circumference to tighten. The underside of the base and the side opposite the cap are slotted 7/16" But I didn't see the slots used with an angle plate ... moreor whatever as a means to secure. One collet is included. I don't know what type of collet this is. The nose& shank resemble a mushroom. With the taper opposite to modern C series collets. This collet is vaguely similar to a Swiss extended nose collet. The collet is marked"3 RIGID 5" and"1/2" The overall length of the collect is 3-3/4" The collet measures 1-5/16" diameter across the nose and 1" along the taper. The shank is 2-3/4" long and straight. The last 9/16" of the shank is ground to 1" diameter. With a slot cut in the end to prevent rotation in the fixture.
