Hand cuffs slave shackles hand forged with key primitive 1800s
These are very early hand forged handcuffs of shackles- possible Civel war era slave shackles. They are in great shape and are 2 7/8" wide. The key is 2 1/2" long and is threaded. You turn the key into the side and the cuffs open. There are decorations on the side. There is a key between the hand cuffs but I could not get it out. Buyer pays shipping. This auction is for 7 Iron Handcuffs or shackles with 15 keys.The cuff side is attached to a round cylinder shape barrel the key fits into the end to open and close. I can not get the cuffs to open.They are closed. Also included in this lot with the cuffs are 15 keys. They are a variety of sizes. The cuffs measure 4 3/4 inches long.3 1/2 inches long, 2 measure 3 inches long and 3 measure 4 1/4 inches long.They are primitive with rust and wear as shown in the photos. Feet would have been inserted into the loops with the iron bar passed through the securement and having the captor hammering on the loop tie to close the set. It's theorized that early traders also threaded chain through these rings to secure several slaves together with one lock. Antique leg irons towers type with key. There are very old leg shackles from a local prison that was torn down a few years back. They have not been wire wheeled or sand blasted. Northampton County in particular had a heavy area of slave work. This piece was dug up by a lady cutting her grass in what was then Northampton County but is now known as Suffolk Virginia. Her lawnmower blade hit the first chain and she then unearthed the rest. The chains measure 28" each and the ball is 11" in diameter. I would guess the balls weight at around 10- 15 pounds. These are Identical to a pair that I saw listed and stamped USMC.These look to possibly had maker sanded off so am not sure of who used or made these.There is possibly a T O but cannot see anything past that.No repairs or breaks but could use some WD oil on hinges at each end of chain because of minor rusting.No key which is not surprising but you always possibly could fabricate one or maybe find one.Pictures describe well.Thanks.

Yes. I am back in the shackle business. At the latest Bethlehem Steel auction there were several lots of shackles for sale. Someone outbid me on the giant(30ton) shackles, yet left me a ton of these smaller shackles, eyebolts and clamps. I also bought over 1000 industrial wrenches. don't ask me why) My wife thought I was crazy before but now she definitely wants to commit me. For sale are five crosby shackles. They are marked 3 1/4 tons and 5/8 inch. Please note* My original plan was to take pictures of the five shackles for sale and then relist them with new pictures. Some buyers are particular about the look of the shackles. This is taking too much time so I am changing tactics.
