The 401/401A was one of thebest and strongest home sewing machines that Singer ever made. It isnothing like today's plastic machines. It is all metal. Including itsmost important feature, allmetal gears. It will make dozens and dozens of fancystitches. And not only that, most of the stitches are adjustable for length andwidth. The serial# is NA513411, made in the USA. This machine has been professionally serviced andis very clean. It has been oiled and greased to factoryinstructions. The camshave been cleaned. The tensionhas been taken apart and cleaned. The balance wheel has beentaken off and cleaned, the tension mechanism has been removed and cleaned. Thebed of the machine bed has been cleaned and polished. The cords have no cracks. This machine doesn't haveany of the green corrosion that is often seen around the joints of the tanbed. ... moreThe bobbin winder works. The top-motion clutch works, the bed feet are intact, the light works,the throat plate lever works and the throat plate lifts easily for darning orfree motion quilting. We are sewing machine collectors and are very passionate about what we do. Which is to restore beautiful vintage sewing machines to the best that they can be. The styling and quality of the materials, along with the workmanship that went into these great machines, it just can't be duplicated today. You seriously cannot buy a machine this good new. This sewing machine just came off the restoration bench and it's looking and sewing like a new machine. I inspected and rebuilt the upper tension for perfect stitches front and back as seen in the photos. The motor. The bobbin case and the wiring all inspected, set timing to Singer factory specs. I take off the faceplate, the gear cases, the hand-wheel, slide plate, bottom plate and the back access plate to clean the old oil and grease build up. I clean out the packed-in lint and dust, remove the thread-jams, inspect the hook and the needle plate, installed new bulb& bobbin winder rubber ring. Up for bids today is a nice used 1956 Singer model 401A heavy duty industrial sewing machine. Picked this up at an estate sale and figured we didn't need as many sewing machines around so this nice collectible has to go. Works nice. But has no bobbin. Some of the plastic posts on top are missing, but could be replaced with wooden dowels. Features zig-zag and straight stitch along with 27 built in stitches and twin needle(which we have no clue how to use) There are the small feet on the back where it used to be mounted in a cabinet. You can sew material as fine as silk and as heavy as leather and upholstery. We haven't cleaned or serviced this but we have tested it and it does work. I picked up this sewing machine at an estate sale. I know only a little about sewing machines. When The sewing machine appears to me to be in very good condition. The unit come with the foot pedal and a power cord. The case has some minor staining and the sewing machine could use a good cleaning. I did not want to clean the unit in fear of damaging something. However as I know very little about them. The pictures will have to serve as the item description. One/two of the cotton holders looks like it broke off. Also, has service invoice for repair on bobbing area. Because of my limited knowledge. Not all functions have been tested and the item is being sold as is.
