MO, this compass is made of aluminum with a movable brass ring around the glass covered dial face. There's minor wear to the olive green paint and it's missing a round part that was attached to the black hinged swivel that folds against the brass ring around the compass. This does not affect the operation of the compass. The compass works fine. This example measures about 5 1/5" long opened and about 3" by 2/1/4" closed. Vintage Machine Industrial Age US Military Brunson Transit Level with Wood Box

The level part has no cracked glass and the instrument focuses perfectly. Other than a couple little tiny nicks. It is in great condition. Comes with a leather cover and what looks like a trammel but I'm no expert so not sure what it is, see pictures. The oak wood case has the usual scuffs and dings plus a crack in the back on the piece of wood that the hinges are mounted to. The area has a piece of duct tape over it as shown. Up for auction is this fine old antique Brunson Theodolite made around 1939 in Kansas City. Missouri. The serial number is 572520. The markin gs I was able to find that are incised on the base are: BRUNSON 572520(serial number) above are the patent numbers(2164051. Etc. Patent#s) and on the other side of the base BRUNING MODEL 50. The compass is marked BRUNSON INSTRUMENT CO. KANSAS CITY. MO The optics are good. The lenses are clear and focus nicely. Everything moves freely and functions as it should. The compass looks fine and see ms complete. But I was not able to'unlock' it or get it to spin. It has been in storage for decades. It displays beautifully and is a great conversation piece on any desk. Stands an impressive 17 1/2" tall with the scope in the upright position and is 7 1/2" in diameter. The Brunson 76-RH Telescopic transit square is the work horse of the optical alignment business. Magnification of the main scope is 20X at 2" and 30X at infinity. The cross scope is is set at infinity and is mounted exactly 90* to the main scope. The one degree field of view provides an erect image. These are 1 arc sec. instruments. Selling a Brunson 617517 transit. This is a superb example of a‘top-of-the-line’ Brunson Optical Square. Or‘Jig Transit’ It differs in a couple respects from the current top-of-the-line instrument(the 76-RH) The most obvious difference is in the construction of the cross-axis alignment telescope. It is a‘straight-shot’ type ocular configuration instead of a right-angle ocular. This does increase the side-to-side aspect ratio of the instrument, but the optical system is more robust and I believe a bit easier and comfortable to use. The other difference is in the design of the base, which in this instrument has a solid azimuth rotation shaft. It does not allow the user to plumb directly to a reference point beneath the transit. Brunson Model 71 Optical Transit- After contacting Brunson directly and providing pictures and serial number. They were able to determine which model I had in my possession. This unit was manufactured in 1962 and appears to be a version of a model 71 Transit; however this unit appears to have a mirror on one side of the axis as well as a vernier circle on the axis. These characteristics would classify it as an Optical Transit. This unit is virtually the same as the 771-H except for the fact the 771-H had a larger axis. The unit comes equipped with a 196-1 Combination Eyepiece unit which allows for Auto collimation, Auto reflection, Projection and Right Angle Viewing. The unit also has a 190 Single Axis Micrometer. There are vertical and horizontal circles that indicate a surveying application and the cross scope in axis and micrometer indicates an optical tooling application. The color of the scope shows that it was most likely made for the military which could explain why this instrument would be able to perform in both applications. This is the earlier version of the base and differs from the current version in two important respects. The spacing of the two‘wye’ supports is slightly wider on the early base– 9.5 inches instead of the current 8.375 inches. The other feature is the captive upper clamping rings with spring-loaded pins. The clamps swing into place over the telescope tube and are held by small precision pins. The support will work with most telescopes and collimators of 2.250” standard diameter. The mount has full 360 degree azimuth rotation which may be clamped at any point whereupon a fine adjustment may be carried out using a large milled knob.
