I cannot begin to know how to use this instrument but I can explain what I see. of course the end cap comes off and there is a little button you slide over to see through the scope. the level works just fine. the wood base is not cracked but it is aged wood slightly darker at leg bottoms the middle sections there is also remnents of a leather strap on one leg that was used to bundle the legss together. We do not have a box for the instrument itself. there is also one small brass pin that is missing there is a brass loop and pin that is being used there is a white plastic wire that is through the pin and tied onto the transit that is just so it will not get lost. all else looks really nice please email any questions I will try to get proper answers asap. the legs bottom to the base of transit 55 inch. For your consideration I have a Berger Transit Tripod. This Tripod was made by The Division of Chicago Steel Tape Co. It features a three leg stand. It also features a black latch on each side for adjusting the tripod up and down for your conscience. The tips of the legs are made of a durable metal and are slightly curved to stake into the ground. There is a black strap to allow you to transport the tripod easily. Clearly this was a piece of equipment that could be used by surveyors, as well as by photographers for setting up large stationary cameras.The top of the stand is covered with a layer of felt which is a little dusty, but intact. No name on this.The only markings are 3 1/2"x8 on the base,looks complete in VG condition but is untested so not sure if it works,minor wear to finish,a few spots of foam rubber from the pads inside the box stuck to the transit,no odvious damage,the box has some wear to the finish and a little dry rot on the strap,the tripod is painted wood with steel tips,58" long,a lot of wear to the painted finish,no cracks or chips in the wood.
