We do beleive the transit to be made of brass and other metals. Everything seems to be working on the transit, nice and clear cross hairs and no damage to the bubble. K&E Surveyor’s Compass Tripod - FOUND
This is the K&E tripod that was made for use with the K&E surveyor’s compass that I listed and sold on eBay last week(shown in two images) Unfortunately when I listed the compass. I was not sure that I could find the tripod. But I did locate it just as the auction ended. Too late to add to the compass auction. It is a rugged unit with legs that extend from 23” to 59” But is somewhat difficult to adjust and the legs do not usually hold their settings, I used to put tape on the locking collars. I’m not doing field work anymore. But if I did, the K&E compass and tripod would be back in service, It is very fast setup. I had the idea to unscrew. From the head of the tripod, the tapered brass post that fits into the compass ball-mount, and fit the post to a modern field photographer’s tripod. It’s just that the new field tripods are ... moreso much lighter. And more easily adjusted than tripods made over fifty years ago. Note: Two photos show the tripod with THE COMPASS. Here is a great Gurley surveyor's compass for your buying consideration. Recently acquired it at an auction. Would make a great gift or keep it for yourself! Great compass made by Gurley Engineering Instruments of Troy. NY. The compass comes with the Jacob's staff that has an adjustable ball joint to facilitate leveling. The two sighting vanes are on the surveyor's compass and look appropriate. Maybe even original to the piece based upon what I have researched online. The one sighting vane has a metal wire down the middle of ... moreit, the other has a slit opening in its' center. The locking mechanism for the needle still operates. The needle moves freely and goes to north when in the unlocked position. Great engraved compass rose face on this compass. The silver colored face still looks good. There is a star engraved in the face above the maker's name. W& LE Gurley of Troy, NY. This compass also comes with a beautiful three legged wood and brass tripod(no manufacturer name on it. The wood and brass tripod is 32.5" long when folded down. There should have been a bolt to go up thru the bottom of the tripod to attach the jacob's staff to it. But alas that piece is no longer there. The glass is intact over the face of the compass. No cracks in glass. The twin brass cased bubble levels are still there with glass and fluids intact in both and are securely attached to the compass body. The brass case has markings along one quarter of it. This surveyor's compass is unique from many that I have seen on sale online over the past few years as it has the jacob's staff(ball and socket piece adapter from compass to tripod) The brass case certainly shows patina and some minor scratching which

Antique Kern - Aarau Surveyor's Transit #22802 Wood Case Tripod Old Surveying
Antique Kern- Aarau Surveyor's Transit#22802 w/ Wood Case& Tripod I do not know if it is complete or missing anything. Guessing by the serial number that it is maybe late 1920's. 1 of the little pieces of glass is cracked, the bracket holding the white glass above it has a broke mount on one side(see photo with arrows) Lock mechanism on box is missing. Optics look good. Not sure if there was a cover on eyepiece. Just picked up from a local estate. It needs cleaned up a little. It looks like all the brass hardware on tripod is there and in very good condition. Wood is really nice. Please view all enlarged photos for best description. Questions welcome. Wood Wooden Tripod Surveyor Camera Telescope Lamp Part Steampunk Vtg ? 27"-49"
I really don't know what this tripod was used for. Or how old it is. It was an estate sale find. It stands about 27" lowered, and about 49" fully extended. The bottom width is about 20" when lowered and about 33" when raised fully. It is made of wood with metal bands, screws and wing-nuts. It would be good for display, or to make a lamp. It seems sturdier lowered a little. I don't really know how much weight it will take. The top piece has a wing-nut, but as I said, not sure what it held. It has been stained dark and does have a few stain drips. I will have to remove the center triangular piece to ship this. So it will fold flatter. One of the extensions that the triangular metal piece is screwed to is bent a little. They all three have a bend at the end, but one is bent a little more. thanks for looking:

VINTAGE K&E KEUFFEL & ESSER 3 1/2 X 8 TRANSIT SURVEYOR TRIPOD TELESCOPING LEGS
Up for auction is a Keuffel& Esser(K&E) 3 1/2 X 8 wooden surveyor/ transit tripod with telescoping legs in like new condition. If this tripod was used. It was not used very much. Please look at the photos to see the condition of the wood. It is beautiful. Even the strap and buckle that holds the legs together in a closed position looks new. Please look at the bottom of the legs. Hardly any wear signs at all.The reason for the cloths under the legs in the photos is so the legs would not damage the carpet. The"dark" or"oily" spots on the K&E cap are from an Armor All-type cleaner. They are not permanent. I used Armor All to wipe down the cap and did not see the left over residue.
