I don't know much about land survey equipment. But this appears to be in very good condition with very limited use. All bubbles work fine. Tripod fully extends. RARE 1874 Knox & Shain Survey Wye Level + Tripod & Box North Penn. Railroad
This is quite a historic old railroad level. On the remains of a label there is the date 1874 and North Penn. Railroad Co. The optics are a little dirty but good, 1 cross hair is there but the other is broke and wrapped around the good one. The original level base and tripod have heavy patina since they were not stored with the same care as the level, needs some cleaning off with a brass wire brush, scope is16 inches long Postage is $45.00 for 2 boxes within the US. Because of the tripod I cannot ship the tripod outside the USA(unless you just want me to ship the brass tripod head and no wood legs) no charge for careful packing. Here is some information on Knox& Shain: Joseph Knox Jr. was born in 1805. His father Joseph Knox Sr. operated the Phoenix Tavern from 1807 to 1822. The Phoenix Tavern was next door to Thomas Whitney's shop ... morein the Northern Liberties. Joseph Sr. also witnessed the inventory of Thomas Whitney's estate. Thus it is very likely that Joseph Knox Jr. served an apprenticeship or at least learned the trade at Whitney's shop which is where he may have met Wm. J. Young. Joseph Knox is first mentioned in Phila directories in 1829 as a mathematical instrument maker. In the 1837 directory and only this directory there is the entry for Draper& Knox at Edmund Draper's address. It is not known where Knox worked from 1829 on but by the early 1840's he was foreman in Young's shop. In 1850 he and Charles J Shain started in business and in the 1850 Franklin Institute Fair they exhibited a telegraph register. Knox made surveying and telegraph instruments until he died died Feb 16 1877 Charles J Shain was born 1822 and served his apprenticeship with Young. There is a Young Compass marked on the under side Tom Tennant March 31 1842 Charles J. Shain April 12 1842. apparently Tom and Charles had nearly finished there apprenticeships and were allowed to put there names on the instrument(out of sight) Shain continued(off and on) with Knox and Shain up to his death in 1891. Survey Transit/Construction Surveying Tripod - 2-Stage Adjustable - Hungary
This is a survey tripod used for surveying or construction use. I'm unable to find any manufacturer name or model number on this tripod. Some markings on the tripod frame are marked"Made in Hungary" Some numbers on the leg parts read 550 512.02. 550 512.03. It also has"PPE" marked on some of the parts. The tripod is in well-used condition with scratches, nicks, wear and dirt on it. The yellow legs are hollow. I'm guessing they are either PVC or fiberglass, it's hard to tell, but they are very sturdy and do not flex much. In closed position the length of the tripod is 42" With all legs fully extended the length of the tripod is just under 6' in length(legs not spread) The feet appear to be in good shape. There is a point on each leg as well as foot-stand that can be used to securely attached the tripod ... moreto the ground. The clamps on each leg hold the tripod securely in it's position. The legs open and close properly. The hinges hold their position when they are opened as well. Overall a very nicely constructed unit and given that it was made in"Hungary" it was probably made by a higher-end manufacturer. The tripod weights just under 12 pounds. This sears craftsman transit comes in a dovetail wood box and has a tripod included in the auction. There is a leather bag for the tripod. What I believe is a plum bob is in the wood box too(see photo) Everything that comes with it is in the photos(not the tape measure) The model number on the box is: 789.46010 The number on the transit itself is: 20899 The tripod opens up and closes. Vintage Craftsman Survey Surveyor Transit w/Tripod
Craftsman transit with tripod.Number on small identification plate is IS 41437.Made in USA.Not sure of age.But would guess it 60's or 70's.Has two built in level bubbles.Very good condition for age.Unit could use a cleaning.View when looking through is nice and clear.A few small specks on the horizontal and vertical lines on magnifying glass.The word'underground' is stenciled on upper area of each leg.Legs are 57" long with pointed metal end tips.Please email with any questions.High bidder pays shipping.
