I purchased this piece at an antique show and sale. I am not an engineer by any means. The former owner told me he purchased it in Kalamazoo. Michigan. It just caught my eye as I had passed it and looked at it many times. I believe this is a museum piece. The compass plate is marked"Heller& Brightly. Philad a. The compass is working as is the lock. The compass face is clear and not cracked. The metal measuring plate on the top side of the transit has#s 30. 20, 10, 0, 10, 20, 30. 30/150, 40/140, etc. It is the small piece of glass on top of the plate that has cracked. The two levels are working and clear. The glass diameter of the compass face measures 5 1/2" The scope is 12/2" in length. Lens 1 3/8" No rust. A nice patina. My husband tested the lens and he said they work very well. It came with the wooden box with ... morethe leather strap. The box measures 13 1/4" in width x 12 1/2" in length. Please see the pics. Antique 1928 Dietzgen Survey Transit Level - Tripod - Wood Case - 14' Grade Rod
Very nice antique 1928 Dietzgen model 14186 black and brass transit and case with tripod and early grade rod. The transit is in very good condition. Slight wear to the top of the piece from use, seems to still be in perfect working order. The wooden case is also in very good condition along with the leather strap and contains a tag with product information from a previous owner. The tripod is a Charvoz No A-37 from Japan, this came with the transit but is not original to it. The grade rod is a 14' survey rod, very old and good condition but the makers label is worn and I can't read it. Excellent antique surveyor's set, would be a wonderful display! You are bidding on a nice vintage L.S. Starrett. Company No. 101-A Leveling Instrument. This was made in Athol, Mass. I do not know the age of this item. It comes in the original box, with the tripod, level, plumb bob, and transit. The level contains liquid and has the bubble. It has been used and the metal is pitted, but item seems to be in working order. The site has no glass(I don't know if it is supposed to) but does have the site markers. Item shows some rust, but knobs turn easily and even I could set it up. Item comes in the original dovetailed wooden box with the label. But does not come with the manual. The hinges on the box are broken and there is a section on the end of the box that has broken off. If hinges were replaced, box would keep item safe. I am not an expert on this item. But there is some wear to the paint here and there. When you look through the scope, the view is pretty clear. The focus wheel works as it should. The box has wear and scratching on the outside as well as some damage to the veneer on the back and front bottom corner. Leather strap is still there. Antique Heller & Brightley Philadelphia Wood Survey Transit Level Tripod Stand
This is an antique HELLER& BRIGHTLEY. Philadelphia, wood survey transit or level tripod stand. When closed. It measures 59 inches tall. The round metal piece on top measures 4 1/8 inches wide. I'm not sure what type of metal the fittings are made of. But they appear to be brass. I believe the top round piece is white metal, though it appears to be very strong. The three pieces on the bottom are made of iron, and they have both pitting and rust on them. But they are very sturdy. There is a piece of strong canvas which is used to keep the three legs together on the bottom. There are numerous scratches. Scuff marks and dings to it. The piece needs a good polishing. This is common with these tripods. There are no breaks. Repairs or damage to it. It weighs a little over 13 pounds.

This is a cool old instrument that comes with the original box with a matching serial number. I have never used one and don't know how they work exactly. So see the pictures and ask any questions before bidding please. There are some empty pouches in the box for a plumb and bubble levels. So it's missing the extras, and eye piece. There are a couple of sun shade type collars on the base. One of these has a mirrored surface in it which appears to be for looking through it on an angle. The box itself is cool. It's study old wood with a leather strap handle. The lower hinge needs two little screws. The box is marked US. I'm not sure if that is a military mark or not. N.Y.U.S.A. ~ Transit Level ~ Presented for your consideration is this excellent piece of surveying history that Gurley Engineer Transit. This all original antique equipment shows no signs of abuse. There are no cracks in the glass or lenses. The optics and motions appear to be perfect and the cross hairs(Radical) are present. The patina is still pretty darn good considering the age of the brass. The level vial is full and function properly. All parts move and turn easily. There are several fine tuning adjustments on the bottom base. The threaded base has a center hook for a plumb bob. A string is still attached there although the plumb bob is missing. This telescope measures approximately 2 1 1/2" ... morelong. Overall height of instrument is 8" and it weighs over 20 pounds. The original wood box still features its original paper label on the interior of the lid. The leather carrying strap is damaged and I can only assume it is original. Box has 2 front closure latches and a key hole. Sorry no key. The interior of the box is in good condition. It has a place to hold the plumb bob and the instrument fits securely inside. The outside shows some wear due to age and use. Box is 9 3/4” tall, 23” long and 5 3/4” wide. A nice old instrument it would look amazing in any collection. Lutz of Japan Hand Held Sight Level Survey Transit with Leather Sheath
Up for bid is a Lutz Hand Held Sight Level in a Leather Case. Marked Japan on the Sheath and Level. I don't know much about this item other than it is used in surveying. It has a bubble in glass that is in good condition. The glass lens is clear, there are few scratches on the level or sheath. There is a screw near the bubble- not sure of it's function. Also not sure if it telescopes or the viewing end comes off. It does rotate. The opposite end does have threads to remove the lens. The case has a loop for wearing on a belt. Previous owner labeled the sheath in black marker. Both pieces look to be in very good shape. Measures 6 1/8" long x 1" across the central portion and the sheath is 7 1/4" long. It is an antique Keuffel& Esser transit. The transit comes in a wood box. The box and transit weigh 30 pounds total. The transit is 14 1/2" tall x 11 1/2" deep x 8" wide. The box is 16 1/2" tall x 9" deep x 14" wide including the handle. Overall. The transit and box are in very good used condition. The transit has nicks and scratches and is in good used condition. The bubble still floats in all the levels. The arrow on the compass is stuck on North. I don't know how the transit works or if it has any pieces missing. The box has been repainted. The handle is wrapped in black tape. A neat. Old transit with the box. A cool display piece.

Up for auction I have a Vintage 1914 Survey Level Transit made by Keuffel& Esser Co of NY. Also included is the box and some accessories as pictured. Its come with a plum bob marked K&E. An empty steel package that contained aluminum wire, and a sun shield. All appears to operate as it should. The cross hairs are very, very fine but can be seen. It is pretty clear field and it focuses as it should. There is a small foot missing on one of the leveling posts as seen in the 5th picture. The box is in poor condition but is still sturdy. Look at the pictures and judge the condition for yourself. This is an extremely high quality piece with a lot of character. It would display very nicely. It was an instructional surveying book with hand written records starting from early 1953 to 1955. It has recorded weather. Points, and the names of each person who helped survey. Here are some of the names mentioned: PFC McDonald, Cpl. McCauley, Pvt. Logston and Pvt. Kaatz, PFC Marsh. Also, Cpl. Hussey, Lt. Ott, Cpl. Linn, Pvt. Logan, Pvt. Linn. and Cpl. Hussey. Up for sale is a used Crain surveying rod. It extends up to 8' It shows signs of use and wear but still works fine. The leveling bubble is intact and functions properly. The slide and lock function works fine as well. The prism is also included and appears to be unbroken but I don't know much about what these are supposed to look like to be able to give an accurate statement of function. Antique W. & L.E. Gurley Transit And Box. 1942. Survey. Industrial. Level
A vintage transit from 1942 with box. The box strap is dry rot and broken. See pictures. Otherwise the transit it self is in working order. Serial number on the box matches the serial number on the transit How To Date Your W. L. E. Gurley Survey Instruments: Gurley instruments can be tricky to date because not all Gurley instruments are serialized. Gurley started using serial numbers in November 1908 and that serial number actually contained the year the instrument was manufactured. The serial numbers can be found on levels. Transits, and larger compasses. Any level. Transit, or larger compass manufactured after November 1908 will have a serial number on it located on the level bar, face of the compass, or on the vernier plate. Gurley may have started to use serial numbers because of a second location that was opened in Seattle in 1908 creating ... morea need to keep track of the instruments sold out of both locations. The serial number log books for Gurley are currently held at the New York State Museum. The first instrument listed in Gurley’s serial number log book is number 81. Since Gurley did not start using serial numbers until November 1908. This was not the first instrument made by Gurley that year but it was the first serialized instrument made in 1908. The first fifty instruments serial numbered 81-850 were all destined for the Seattle branch. The first digits of the serial number indicate the year it was made; i.e. Serial number 9254 was the 254th instrument made in 1909. Two examples are shown below. The image on the left is serial number 13601 which would be the 601st instrument made in 1913. The image on the right is serial number 14725 which would be the 725th instrument made in 1914. Gurley also used a different serial number system believed to have been implemented for Government contracts. Antique BRASS TRANSIT Scope by W & L.E GURLEY Survey LEVEL c.1860 CIVIL WAR ERA!
Up for bid is the vintage/antique ENGINEERING/ SURVEYING TRANSIT LEVEL/ SPOTTING SCOPE by W. L.E. GURLEY in Troy. N.Y. circa the mid to late 1800's(best guess) as seen in the pictures/ as described in the title. Manufacturer's markings found atop the tripod attachment piece(see pics) NO serial number found at base and level positioned below the scope(indicating a pre-1900's model) From my research, I am confident that this is a very early(possibly 1st or 2nd, ever) model dating as far back as 1860. I also believe that it is one of, if not the largest/longest Gurley ever made(see below for dimensions and weight) I am pleased to be able to say that it is in shockingly superb used/vintage/antique condition with NO major defects whatsoever. Optics are clear and adjust/focus like new. Level works perfectly with a nice large/wide bubble ... morefor precision levelling. All knobs work good/great(some alittle tight but nothing a squirt of oil wouldn't instantly remedy) and are incredibly sensitive/accurate! NO scratches, cracks or chips to either lens/glass. I sort of in awe of this amazing piece of science& technological history.an engineering masterpiece and marvel of its time. Furthermore, beyond its practical use& functionality, it is an aesthetically stimulating work of art that would command attention and intrigue on any shelf, bookcase or desk!
