There is some minor dust inside the unit as can be expected from an item this old but no damage or signs of any abuse. Information from the Internet: The"Aqua Survey" compass is an example of a'dip needle' or'dipping needle' compass. It is used to detect iron pipes. Or magnetic subsurface survey marks. These compasses are still being manufactured today, by the AquaLocator company, Cedarville OH for $284 plus $26 for the leather ... morecase. They will also adjust and/or repair older units. This compass looks a bit odd because it has two viewing windows oriented at 90 degrees to each other. The compass needle itself is in the face of the large side. The smaller window on'top' is used for sighting down. Through the 45-degree mirror and looking at the backside of the'face' The back of the compass face is printed in reversed writing just for this purpose. It is used first by holding it horizontal. And aligning the compass so that the red needle points to the"North" cardinal point on the face. The compass is then rotated so that the plane of the compass face is aligned vertically along the North-South line, as indicated by the cardinal points shown through the top window. In operation. The user is supposed to hold the compass by laying the strap across three fingers, and dangling the compass just above the surface of the ground. In this position, the weighted S needle, painted black, will drag the needle into a vertical position, and the red-painted North end of the needle can be seen through the top window. There are not any prior ownership markings on it(names. Company etc. This has been tested and is 100% operational and ready to take to the site. Controls work precisely and smoothly with no visible wear. This is a nice instrument. There is only slight abrasions from transport and 2 very small smudges of marking paint on the shaft(could probably be removed easily) The case is intact and latches and hinge are great. There are abrasions on the outside of the carry case from what looks like truck box abrasions but the tool is much nicer than the case. From what I gather from the instructions this device is used to locate underground water valves by picking up the magnetic field of a magnetop marker that was driven in when the valve was installed. The needle points to magnetic north when this device is laid flat but it needs to be laid within 180 degrees of that direction as this is only for lack of better words a"half compass" This in and of itself would verify that the compass aspect is in working order. The device is in good cosmetic condition. No cracks, chips or repairs. Viewing windows are clear. The case has a small scuff and ding as brought to your attention with green hiliter in the pictures, other that that it looks quite minty. Strap is in fine working order.
