Vintage David White wye level, restored showpiece for surveying, engineering
Very nice old David White wye level. Based on the serial number. It was built in 1936. Based on the factory engraving, it, at one time, belonged to the City of Oshkosh. It appears to have been either have been very well taken care of and used very little, or(as I believe) professionally restored at some point. It is very clean, the optics and crosshairs are very good and crisp. It appears to be fully operational but I have not tested it. The horizontal motion lock and fine motion knob work fine. The leveling screws all work fine. Really a nice piece. The scope is 18" long and the unit is about 8 1/2" tall and weighs just short of 11 pounds. The instrument also comes with original brass lens cap and sunshade. It also comes in the original wood box with leather strap handle. The box measures about 20" x 7" x 10" and ... moreweighs 8 pounds. The box has some scratches, scrapes and small dings but is solid. I bought it a while back from a retired concrete contractor who was going to take it to an auction. I offered him a fair price for two instruments and now want to sell this one. The telescope as shown measures 11 1/2" or 29.2 cm and stands 14 1/2" or 36.8 cm high. The telescope has a fine adjusting knob on the top and a spirit level below. Below the telescope is a compass. Adjusts to perfect vision for whatever you are wanting to focus in on. My husband actually considered using this to sight in a rifle. Outter case has some smudges on it that absolutely would not come off. I think it might be concrete. Case still looks pretty nice. Just has a few smudges here and there. Has been gently used and shows minor signs of wear and tear. In the construction business, that is rare! The only signs of wear I could really see are on the outter case. You will see in the pictures that there are some smudges on the case and I could not seem to get them off. Transit looks great and is in mint condition.
