Up for sale is a old David White survey transit model 8014 with original case. The transit has a front lens cover and the knobs spin freely it could use a good cleaning. The box has a name on the top that I can not make out and the carry handle is not there but the outline of one is. The box is also dirty. Looking through the sight I can only see light. The transit was bought as a decorative item.This is part of 4 pieces of survey equiptment that I bought from a estate sale. I brought them home thinking they looked good my wife thought other wise. ANOTHER ONE OF JACK'S AUCTIONS! Well used and with a couple of obvious issues. This is a David White Realist Transit, model TR303. The first obvious issue is the front lens which is VERY cloudy. I've pictured that in my second-to-last picture. It looks as though someone tried to remove the lens. I say that because the two notches that you use to unscrew the ring around the lens have a mark on them. The other obvious issue is that one of the two clear-glass windows that cover the degree markings is missing. That can be seen in my last picture above. All the dials and levels seem to work as they should. I'm not knowledable about transits so I can't tell you how well it will work when you clean or replace the lens. Come with its red carrying case that snaps onto the base of it. The instrument is in good vintage condition and the carrying case is solid. The handle is holding fast. Serial number is 106228. This tool was obviously used. Like I said it is in good vintage condition but there are some indicators of its age. The case especially is worn with a lot of the paint scraped off and some oxidation on the metal fixtures. The tool itself has some surface wear and slight oxidation here and there. The glass has some discoloration but still looks alright. I am not an expert on this kind of tool, however I don't see any substantial damage to it. Mark II Sextant, which was used to determine maritime longitude/latitude based on the location of the stars from the horizon. The label affixed inside the top lid says"U.S. Naval Observatory, Washington D.C. Collimation Certificate, dated Aug 2, 1944, sextant number#16240-43, type MK 2 E.T.S. No 104, and is signed by W R Bailey, U.S.N. DAVID SOUTER SIGNED BLACK& WHITE ORIGINAL FRAMED ILLUSTRATION DATED 1933 I am putting up for auction a black and white illustration framed signed and dated by David Souter of ladies on a beach(probably Bondi Beach) and there is a cat hidden in the illustration(the dark haired ladys bathers are a cat face. The size of the illustration is: 31 x 24 cms and including the frame is: 52 by 46 cms. Some background about this fascinating man. David Henry Souter(1862-1935) black-and-white artist and journalist born in Scotland Aberdeen, settled in Sydney in 1887. David worked for the printer John Sands for ten years before joining William Brooks& Co. Ltd as an illustrator. In the 1880s Souter drew cartoons for the weekly Tribune and News of the Week. For forty years from 1895 he had at least one cartoon published in every edition of the Bulletin ... moreand had the distinction of naming his own modest price for a drawing. His graceful pen work showed the early influence of Art Nouveau, a style sinuous and flowing. The drawings were strong on the printed page with large black solid areas complementing fine, firm pen lines. His compositions and groupings were helped by the inclusion of the familiar Souter cat which reputedly originated as a result of the artist furbishing an inkblot on one of his drawings. Vintage David White wye level, restored showpiece
Very nice old David White wye level. Based on the serial number. It was built in 1936. Based on the factory engraving, it, at one time, belonged to the City of Oshkosh. It appears to have been either have been very well taken care of and used very little, or(as I believe) professionally restored at some point. It is very clean, the optics and crosshairs are very good and crisp. It appears to be fully operational but I have not tested it. The horizontal motion lock and fine motion knob work fine. The leveling screws all work fine. Really a nice piece. The scope is 18" long and the unit is about 8 1/2" tall and weighs just short of 11 pounds. The instrument also comes with original brass lens cap and sunshade. It also comes in the original wood box with leather strap handle. The box measures about 20" x 7" x 10" and ... moreweighs 8 pounds. The box has some scratches, scrapes and small dings but is solid. I bought it a while back from a retired concrete contractor who was going to take it to an auction. I offered him a fair price for two instruments and now want to sell this one.
