This is a very rare hard to find WWI US Army Medical Department Surgical Instrument Field Sterilizer. It is shown in the March 1944 MEDICAL SUPPLY CATALOG on plate 40. It measures 2 5/8” high. 1 7/8“ wide and 1” deep, and is stamped on the bottom, U.S.A. M.D. Pioneer, New York, N.Y. These sterilizers were issued to doctors and NCO corpsmen on the front lines and were carried in the officer or enlisted medical equipment bags. The top lid lifts up expose the curved tray. The front panel drops down to access the alcohol burner. The cap on the burner unscrews to expose the wick which is still intact.This is a great piece to add to your collection.
