Description: Offered is good and early compound microscope by the Scottish maker James White in its original French polished mahogany case. Scottish instruments don’t often come up for sale and one in this condition complete with all of its original accessories is quite a rare find. The microscope is quite early as the objectives are Pre RMS thread putting it between 1850 and roughly 1860/70. The objective lenses are very similar to the ones produced in France consisting of 3 separate lens cells which can be screwed into each other to increase or decrease magnification. The microscope stands on a‘Y’ shaped base plate with cork pad feet. The two sweps uprights terminate with trunnions that support the main limb of the instrument At the base of the microscope is ... morea brass rod on which slides the gimballed support for the plano-concave mirror. Above the mirror is the stage which can be slid around via the two knurled nuts at the sides of the stage. Below the stage is a wheel of stops. Very handsome brass microscope housed in a nice looking dovetail mahogany case with purple velvet lining both the lid and part of the interior that seems to be original.The condition of the microscope seems to be near mint, with original lacquer still present. The mahogany case measures(27.5 cm/10.8” x 14.5 cm/5.7” x5.5 cm/2.2” With a brass carry handle on top and side-mounted slide locks. The original front lock is missing, but the front plate still remains. There is a small crack in the upper right corner of the case top. The bottom seems to have been covered with paper at one time and contains some cracks. One of the hinges has a stamped label, with what seems to be a registration number of–TPT0271641. Smoothly functional,and very well preserved, measuring roughly 24.5 cm(9.6 inches) tall in closed position, and 35.0 cm(13.8 inches) tall with the draw tube in extended position. There is a spring-loaded stage that accommodates sliders. The draw tube can be manually moved, and the coarse focus is rack and pinion, which works smoothly. The plano-concave mirror is in very good condition, and adjustable. Case Contents Slide Content List Included is a framed hand-written list of specimens for 6sliders. Which seems to be original. Some of the bone sliders have markings which seem to be corresponding to the list for numbers 1, 4-6. The 2 remaining slides are unmarked. Antique Brass and Japanned Iron Compound Microscope made by the Bausch and Lomb Optical Company in Rochester. New York, U.S.A. around 1915. The number 8174 is stamped or engraved on the bottom of the eyepiece tube; on the top black plate which is screwed on says: Pat. Jan. 5, 1915. The Microscope has a 6.4 magnification lens or eyepiece, two knobs for raising or lowering the lens, an adjustable iris, and a double-sided reflector mirror. Note that there is a very small chip on the edge of one side of the reflector mirror and two tiny brown stains on the other side. Also, included are 3 Bausch& Lomb objective lenses: Two lenses are marked patented on Oct 13, 1925: 1) 16mm 0.025 10X” and, 2) 4mm 0.65 43X” the third one is marked“4mm 0.65 N.A. Also included are 10 assorted glass slides of which a few are chipped. The Microscope stands a little ... moreover 11 inches high when the lens is in its fully extended position and it rotates on its base to adjust the viewing angle. The Microscope is clean. Free of rust or corrosion, but does have some of the black paint worn away along the back of the stand. The brass has developed a warm golden patina. Both of the adjustable side-clips that hold the glass slides in place on its stage are attached. The Microscope appears to be in very good working condition. A fine cedar wood fitted box is also included in the sale. It was manufactured by the Eagle Lock Company. Terryville, Connecticut. The lock is stamped thus, including USA. The lock& its working key are in excellent condition. To open the box. Undo the latches, turn the key, and push the small round button to the side. Two Art Nouveau design latches secure the sides. Inside the box are compartments for 5 objective lenses, plus one for the eyepiece, as well as the footprint for the microscope itself. The sec#2 is a coated 5. 0.10 blue marked and third#3 is a 10x marked yellow with 0.25. the main eye is broken but you can see through it almost 90% all the other 3 magnifications lenses are fine. THE MAIN LENS WITH LET YOU SEE NO MORE THAN THE PERCENTAGE I TOLD. ALMOST ALL THE IMAGE. the main base neck was broken so i take detailed pictures of where the crack was. I fix it. And seal it with superglue called"krazyglue" brand. this microscope hooks to ac with its cable wall. the light works fine. it has a 365' degree on its main lens. i tried to look where and who made it but all i found was these 3 companys and 1 guess. CFN Plan 40X objective. And a CF Plan APO 100X oil immersion objective. The eyepieces are CF 10X WF and the Abbe condenser is 1.25 N.A. Included but not pictured is a slide holder for the mechanical stage. The microphot comes equipped with a built in magnification changer and focusing phase telescope. Mag factors: 1X, 1.25X, 1.6X, and 2X) Illumination is provided by a 12 volt 100 watt halogen source and flip in filters for blue, green, didinuim, and 3-neutral density. Although the body is labelled EH, it appears to be the body style of the FH model. This microscope is in excellent working condition. A real workhorse. It has a focusable condensor. Adjustible light intensity, and a gear-driven XY mechanical stage. The 5-place turret is equipped with 4 Plan Apochromat objectives: 4X- 0.10 na 10X- 0.25 na 40X- 0.65 na 100X Spring-loaded oil- 1.30 na The oculars are 10X wide-field.
