Leitz, Zeiss, Olympus and Nikon similar brands. The microscope is Universal and in present configuration has multiple light sources(100W halogen and 200W mercury lamps are on board plus multiple slots available for external spectral lamps) Among the other features are the set of interchangeable filters embedded into light path, mixer and switch box of light sources, retractable heat filter, additional slot for standard Reichert sliders. The microscope is capable of bright/dark field observations with full set six bright/dark field objectives included into the nosepiece and capable to function in the reflective/transmissive mode. Very rare Japanese, M&Katera microscope----Olympus, Tiyoda,Nikon.
A very early M&Katera Tokyo. Antique brass microscope.It dates from around 1920. The company history of Olympus details M&Katera as the progenitor of Olympus, having been made by the founder of Olympus. A number of parts on the microscope are marked A20, perhaps indicating the model# It is a very early example, of this particular model, with a graceful curved and Japanned base. Any other versions extant of this microscope, that I have seen, have a plain squarish horseshoe base and were probably made much later. There are some references. Indicating that M&Katera used E.Leitz optics and indeed there are elements of the design of this microscope that pay homage to a Leitz design but the#3 objective fitted to this instrument,marked M&Katera Tokyo 3, although similar to an E.Leitz#3 is not the same. The objective works beautifully ... moreand in comparison to a Leitz objective from the same period, it is about as good-in sharpness, with possibly better contrast. The#7 objective fitted into the two piece nosepiece in this instrument is an E.Leitz objective, matched very well to the#3, and also provides a fine image. The eyepiece marked 3, appears to be original as well. All parts of this microscope work as expected. The coarse rack and pinion is tight and smooth and the column. Helical screw, fine adjustment is likewise smooth and precise. The nosepiece and substage disc diaphragm have precise clickstops. The ocular tube is adjustable from 130mm to 195mm. The microscope appears to be solid brass with nickel plating.Japanning and enamel. This is a beautiful and rare instrument, important to the history of Olympus. The first and second pictures are through the#3 objective and the fitted#3 eyepiece. The third is the same as#2( a group of diatoms) but with the#7 objective and#3 ocular.
