Antique Easter Island Rapa Nui Ika Fish Man Wood Carving Sculpture Figurine OLD
Hi. You are bidding on a very very old carved fish from Easter Island. The estate I purchased this from had several old Easter Island pieces. But this appears to be much older than the others. I believe this is carved from Casuarina or Toromiro wood. It is around ten inches long. It has obsidian and bone eyes, but the obsidian is gone from one of the eyes. According to a website description of Easter Island Ika or carved fish, the fish all have basically the same shape. THey have a body like a slight comma, a large head, short beak and eyes with many incised circles. The older of these Easter Island fish are carved more elaborately, as this one is. The wood is also hard and aged the way Toromino wood sculptures appear, but I do not know wood composition for sure.
